As vintners, Gary and Jeanne Newman approach Jorian Hill with passion, and without pretension, as they work to handcraft small-lot, Rhône-varietal wines using fruit from their family's organically farmed Santa Ynez Valley estate vineyard. The Newmans did not set out to own a winery. Longtime residents of Los Angeles, for years they had enjoyed a love affair with the coastline and foothills of Santa Barbara County, regularly exploring the area's many back roads and winery gems. In 2005, they began looking for property in the region, hoping to find a new home for their family. After months of searching, they discovered an idyllic 20-acre estate, nestled amidst the rolling hills of Ballard Canyon. In addition to its stunning hillsides and country house, the property offered something unexpected-7.5 acres of excellent Syrah and Viognier vines covering a southwesterly facing hill. "Before we even saw the house, just driving onto the property it felt like home," says Jeanne, reflecting on her first impressions Read more »

  • Jorian Hill Red Rhone Blend Santa Ynez Valley Beespoke 2009

    Snoothrank:

Creamy red berries greet the nose along with a gentle underlay of spice with hints of pink peppercorns and red flowers along with well-judged vanilla and caramel notes. This is lovely, entering the mouth with freshness and brightness. There's an initial whack of something vaguely medicinal, minty and spice which is followed by rich yet fresh ber... Read More

  • Jorian Hill Red Rhone Blend Santa Ynez Valley Beespoke 2009

    Snoothrank:

Very oaky aroma, with nuttiness. The fruit comes out more in the palate, with blackberries and cherries. I really like how they play into the finish, which maintains a good slightly tart body with a little hint of jam. Read More

  • Jorian Hill Red Rhone Blend Santa Ynez Valley Beespoke 2008

    Snoothrank:

Tons of complexity in the nose - seems to shapeshift with every inhalation. Really well integrated wood notes with cayenne pepper and fresh fruit, a bit of creaminess. The attack is very tart, with a smooth finish. Read More

  • Jorian Hill Red Rhone Blend Santa Ynez Valley Beespoke 2007

    Snoothrank:

This offers up very complex aromas of sweet candied fruits, dried hay, smoky oak, diesel exhaust, forest floor, raw beef and a really strong black tea top note. Nicely rich and quite bright with succulent acidity lending this a red fruited character. The tannins creep up on the mid-palate and really begin to assert themselves, adding an autumnal... • With the arrival of fall, it’s always fun to take a look at some of the heartier reds that have been hibernating through the warmer months. I get to taste a lot of wine, but I always look forward to the chances I get to taste Syrah. To me, Syrah is sort of the Riesling of red grapes: remarkably expressive of site. Syrah -- unlike some other, mor... Read More
