In 1997 John Anthony Truchard began leasing and managing vineyard property with the idea of one day producing a small quantity of high end wines to share with friends and family. The idea was simple – pick ideal climate and locations for the fruit, choose the best vine stock available, care and tend to each vines needs, work with the best winemaker you can find, and share the end result with those who will most appreciate it. Fortunately his wife Michele shared his passion and together in 2003 they crushed what would become their first vintage of Cabernet and Syrah. The fruit that goes into the wines are sourced only from vineyards leased or managed by John Anthony Truchard. This level of viticultural control is the foundation for the wines produced. – Description from John Andrews

  • I love N. Rhone Syrah.  It's my favorite red wine in France.  But the acreage of the region is so small and the area that provide its best wines even smaller, that prices have hit the roof.  Sure, there are a few St. Josephs and Crozes-Hermitages that come in around $25, but those are either made for earlier drinking and a lot less thrilling wit... • As a Californian, I have felt the loss of such old names as Almaden, Christian Brothers and Inglenook.  (OK, I guess Almaden still exists as a mocking shell of its former being.  OK, I know it never was great, but their bottles did have corks.  Maybe I am the only person who feels a sense of loss of Almaden.)  Another of the old abused names is ... Blueberry and licorice greet the nose with an oddly pleasing duet. The palate is creamy, with blueberry compote, blackberry and cocoa morphing into a long, tasty finish. Tight in a good way focused and wound, rolling out fruit notes through the heat and zing of a long peppery finish whose sourness begs for fruit to play with. Read More

  • John Anthony Vineyards Syrah Oak Knoll 2006

I found this wine to be dynamic with food with all the characteristics of a really good Syrah, peppery, front and back end fruit with meaty overtones, at a very reasonable price. I bought two bottles, One at the Ivy Hotel San Diego Wine bar (88 wines by the taste, half glass or glass for $27. The second bottle was purchased to take home a a w... Read More
