  Someone was just elbowing me in the ribs about one of her favorites, Iron Horse from Sonoma (I think she spent too much time in Sebastopol ;-) ). Not my personal favorite, but I'll toss it out there, too.

  Okay, reporting back. As things do when multiple people are involved, the wine ... and smooth tannins 2005 Iron Horse Thomas Road Pinot Noir-enjoyable but perhaps not as lush and full as I expected due to the point scores and stature of this bottle within the IH line-up 2006(?) Adelaida Zinfandel-great wine, didn't exhibit any of the notable alcohol or hotness that many people disdain in zins. But was rich and round without being overly jammy 2004 Mondavi Reserve Cab Sauv-always a great bottle of wine, this one was no exception. Decanted for about 45 minutes before pouring 2005(?) Vincent Arroyo Rattlesnake Acres Petite Sirah-also decanted for 45 minutes. Very enjoyable wine, though not as rich and robust as I expected for both a PS and for the higher end bottling from this producer 2005 Turley Charbono-went home with the birthday honoree as we didn't have it in us to kill-off another bottle (sad, I know) Thanks for the advice and interest in my "plight"    (hide)

Sonoma (e.g. Schramsberg, Iron Horse and the French operations like Domaine Chandon and Mumms Napa) for (somewhat) cheaper alternatives to champagne prices. You'll be wanting their Brut, not cremant, offerings, of course. ;-) For rosé you might try those from Tavel and some of the others being made in the southern Rhone area. Also, check out those from the Loire, though you'll need to watch for the dryer ones. I just had a 2008 Vacheron Sancerre Rosé that was the perfect autumn rosé, with cranberries and cinammon yet a very pinot-noirish mouthfeel like a wellmade Burgundy. Medium-bodied yet quite fresh. Hey, it even has some of that 'mineral' flavor that we all love to talk about! My guess is that this is a rosé that will age for a bit, too. You should also check out rosatos from Italy or Italian varietals (such as sangiovese from California or the Pacific Northwest). As Greg so rightly points out, stay away from white zinfandels, for peace of mind and health of palate and soul... ;-    (hide)

  I'm going to cheat and name 3. For me it was not so much a single wine as it ... my obsession, were Iron Horse Blanc de Blancs, Niebaum-Coppola Cab Franc, and Gundlach-Bundschu Cab Franc. Interestingly I haven't had the latter 2 in a number of years, but now I'm thinking I should...

  Distinctive and elegant. This bubbly is aged four plus years on the yeast in the bottle. it is like drinking a cloud.
