Hundred Acre is a Napa cult winery based in Rutherford in California. The wines are produced by Jayson Woodbridge with winemaker Philippe Melka. These highly sought-after wines are available through the winery’s (extensive) mailing list, with precious few of these small production wines via retail and auction. With prices starting well into the hundred dollar range, the winery specializes in 100% Cabernet Sauvignon with names like Precious and Deep Time. More recently, they began producing a Zinfandel (Dark Matter) and the Gold, an unoaked blend of Chardonnay, Viognier and Gewürztraminer that contains tiny gold flecks in the bottle. Woodbridge is also involved in the far more accessible Layer Cake brand.

Last month, in the company of forty-five wine writers, I caught up with Murrieta’s Well winemaker Robbie Meyer. We tasted through a selection of his latest wines, and I continue to be absolutely floored by Robbie’s work. The Murrieta’s Well property provides a base of superior ingredients, and Robbie uses them to great advantage. The Murrieta’s W... Read More

Hasn’t it? When we started Snooth back in 2007, rosé was not such a hot button topic. Its growth over the past eleven years is astounding. Nielsen reports that sales of still rosé have risen sixty-five percent since last year. Sparkling rosé sales jumped by sixteen percent. The funny thing is, we can assume that prior to direct pressing most all... Read More

White wines are a summer classic, but it has been a long summer. There is a good chance that you are surfeit with white wine by now. Ultra-hip rosé and orange wines aren’t your only options. Be a true trendsetter and cozy up with a late summer red. Summer calls for diaphanous red wine grapes that allow fresh fruits to shine without the deep, dar... Read More

What are the secrets of a winemaker with over one hundred 90+ point wines across decades, appellations, and grapes? Perhaps it’s like any top chef: Add a pinch of this, a dash of that, and voila – you’ve got an award winning product. But decorated Murrieta’s Well winemaker Robbie Meyer doesn’t believe in recipes. Rather, he brings an intuitive c... Read More

DM, let me start with your #2 Cult Napa Cabs. This thread got my curiosity going as to the most expensive Cali cabs - who they are and how much they cost. This is a wine-searcher article last updated this month showing the names and average bottle price over several vintages. Have to say that I have not had a taste of a single one of these wines... It's interesting that a few new topics have popped up recently (Experiencing Cabernet Franc for one) and that my wife Sandra just today handed me an article by Dave McIntyre she cut out of a Washington Post newspaper dated 25 March 2015.
