In 1970, San Francisco firefighter Cecil De Loach and his wife Christine staked their claim in the wine grape business by purchasing 24 acres of old-vine Zinfandel in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. In the early seventies, the De Loaches decided to acquire additional vineyard land. For several years they watched others make notable wine from their grapes before making the decision to produce wine under the De Loach label in 1975. More than three decades later, Cecil and Christine sold that label and have continued their winemaking skills at the helm of a small family winery that employs a simple philosophy - craft exceptional wines, from the highest quality grapes, that people love to drink. We consider each step of the winemaking process an opportunity to showcase the distinctive flavors contained within our carefully cultivated grapes. Every bottle of wine is a worthy representation of the best effort from each and every person at Hook and Ladder Vineyards and Winery. On 375 acres situated Read more »

  • Hook and Ladder Chardonnay Russian River Valley 2012

    Snoothrank:

Fruit forward and not much oak make this an excellent Russian River chardonnay. Citrus, lemon peel and a bit of stone minerality combine with a medium length finish. This is best with a little air time and served not too chilled. Read More

  • Here's the report from our trip to the Russian River area and Mendocino. Our normal routine is to split one tasting and then buy one or two bottles of what tasted best.  I find that we can do an adequate job of tasting, visit a decent number of wineries and still be standing at the end of the day.  We visit places which welcome walk-ins and we al... • We're heading back to (my favorite wine region) Russian River the first weekend in October and are looking for advice on what to do and what to expect.  We've been to RRV several times but only during the off season.  Is there anything special we should do at this time of year, and conversely, is there anything we should avoid? • Hook & Ladder Red Blend Russian River Valley the Tillerman 2009

    Snoothrank:

This was part of a Hook and Ladder food and wine pairing dinner. This is made from grapes from opposite opp chalk hill. This has leathery nose. Plush toasty wine with notes of meatiness, blueberry and plum. It is well balanced with nice layering complexity and a dry end. It was a good pairing with the best dish so far. The fats from the pork roas... Read More

  • Hook & Ladder Russian River Valley Los Amigos Ranch Cabernet Franc 2009

    Snoothrank:

This was part of a Hook and Ladder food and wine pairing dinner. This smells of nail polish although the taste is entirely different. It was fruit forward, a little tart and vegetal. With obvious tannin structure, the end was dry and did not linger much. Again a good pairing of fat and tannins with the coffee rubbed tri-tip and the juicy sauce wa... Read More

  • Hook & Ladder Red Blend Russian River Valley Station Ten 2008

    Snoothrank:

This was part of a Hook and Ladder food and wine pairing dinner.72% Zinfandel, 14% Petite Syrah, 8% Carignane, 6% Alicante Bouschet. The last grape being emphasized by Josh in the introduction. This had a smell of chocolate brownie with raspberry smell along with a more subtle cabbage. A little lighter than the previous Zin, this was toasty with... Read More

  • Hook & Ladder Zinfandel Russian River Valley 2008

    Snoothrank:

This was part of a Hook and Ladder food and wine pairing dinner. We were told that this was the last of tipsy turvy 2008 vintage. There was hints of toasty caramel in the nose with lushious fruits. This plush Zin was fruit forward with plenty of berries. It was juicy as reflected in the high abv. It was not a good pairing which brought out the al... Read More
