Highlands Winery began in 2001 with the vision of using ultra premium Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel to produce world class wines in the Bordeaux tradition. Using French oak barrels and hands-on craftsmanship these wines were produced in small lots with careful attention to detail. The results are wines which drink very well upon release and continue to improve for many years. Highland’s founders were pioneers in the Napa Valley wine business. This experience stands out in the structure and complexity of Highland’s wines. – Description from Nerevar

  • Gallo Signature Series Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands 2014

    Snoothrank:

Pure, floral, fresh and fruity on the nose, this is very cherry noted and inviting. On the palate this continues to show excellent purity of fruit, expressing an elegant and delicate but assertive cherry note that's classic Pinot but also a pleasant herbal earthiness supporting the fruit and adding depth and complexity. Easy drinking and approac... Read More

  • Okay, we're counting down to the end of the year.  With three drinking weeks left, start nominating your wines of the year.  And, if you like, nominate a wine experience of the year. I'm going to have to think about the WOTY for a while, and I'll update this OP as things occur to me, but I'm going to say it wasn't a year full of head turning win... • Happy Halloween, wine lover! This hallowed holiday isn't just for kids. Adults can and should enjoy their favorite Halloween candies with a little bit of wine. Wine and Halloween candy pairings may be contrived, but that doesn't make them any less fun. In fact, these pairings are quite complex. They are a fine and delicate art not suited to the ... • The majority of wines on the market these days are meant to be consumed within one to five years. This is a natural law. Producing wines that can sit in the cellar for decades is time-consuming and expensive. There is a time and place for wines that age and adventurous palates are required. Most all age-worthy wines will have high acid, tannin, ... Read More

  • Morgan Winery Pinot Noir Twelve Clones Santa Lucia Highlands 2013

    Snoothrank:

The Morgan Twelve Clones Pinot is a light to medium claret color. It is vibrantly fruity on the nose with aromas of sweet cherries, hints of liquorice and surprisingly cassis, which I usually relate to heavier reds like Cabs. There is brilliant wallop of fruits on the initial taste, which seems to last forever and lingers into smooth milk choc... Read More

  • I haven t had a lot of stand out California Grenache. I've tastes a lot through different events. Most of it has been an afterthought for a winery that could get some fruit. • On and off with differing frequency mention is made on these boards of garnacha as a choice for certain palates, and in certain contexts. Most of the mention here is pretty generic, and doesn't get down to any level of detail.Would like to suggest we take up the subject of wines from this grape with better focus. Where is good, who makes the goo... Read More

  • Okay, getting back to the topic at hand, in effect the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA is the other side of those mountains.  Arroyo Seco is basically due east of Big Sur.  And there's San Antonio Valley a little further south.  (Pierce Family, whom I have touted on the "Completely Different" thread, are down there.)  Here's a nice map: http://wine.ap... Was reminiscing on that today, and wondered why I never hear about wine from that area.
