The Henty Wine Region located in south-west Victoria has a history with links back to the pioneer settler family of Edward Henty. He arrived with his family in Portland Bay on the 19th November 1834, establishing the first permanent settlement. In the log of their schooner "Thistle" a barrel of vine cuttings was documented. This was the first record of vines in Victoria. The wine producing areas are concentrated around Condah, Hamilton and Tarrington with sparkling grape production concentrated around Drumborg and Portland. Henty Estate, located to the north of Hamilton was established in 1991. The vineyard is approximately halfway between the wine growing regions of Great Western and Coonawarra. Our vineyard is situated on the north facing slopes of an ancient volcanic eruption point. Long dry summers and autumns combine with the well drained red brown clay soils to produce full flavoured cool climate grapes of superb quality. The seven hectares of vines rows are orientated north south to ensure even sunlight exposure to both sides of the canopy. The vines are cane pruned and vertical shoot positioned. This management regime is very labour intensive and achieves excellent fruit distribution Read more »
