The world’s largest and possibly most recognizable Cognac brandy producer was established by Irish entrepreneur Richard Hennessy in the late 18th century. Hennessy served in the French army for 12 years to gain citizenship, and it is for this reason that the “bras armé” is the official symbol of the brand. Jean Fillioux was hired as the first master blender in 1786. The brandy is produced within the four main regions of Cognac, France: Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, and Fins Bois, and is a blend of Cognacs produced and barrelled by independent growers and distillers. The brand boasts the largest Cognac aging facility, with the capacity to age and store a quarter million casks. Moët Champagne acquired the brand in 1971 to become the Moët Hennessy Group. Hennessy is considered a luxury brand, with a recent popularity among celebrities and followers of the hip-hop music scene.
