H. Dönnhoff

A Nahe estate - and one of the top performers. Not many estates outside the Mosel receive as much attention as those within it, but if there are any exceptions then perhaps Dönnhoff is one. The estate, which is over 12 hectares in size, has been in the Dönnhoff family since 1750, and is currently run by Helmut Dönnhoff. The Dönnhoffs own vines in only the top vineyards of the Nahe Valley. These vineyards are sited in several nearby villages, namely Niederhäuser (Hermannshöhle), Oberhauser (Brucke), Schloßböckelheimer (Felsenberg and Kupfergrube), and Norheimer (Kirschheck and Dellchen). The vineyards are principally slate or volcanic soil, and are planted with Riesling and also some Burgundian varieties.

  • Donnhoff Norheimer Dellchen Riesling Auslese 18 2006

Special bottle. This was given to me by a coworker on a special occasion and tasted with my wife on the eve that we left a much loved apartment. On to the wine - lovely apricot and rose petal aromas with a hint of classic riesling petrol and orange marmalade. Tasting this in 2014, there's a fair bit of age on this, shown in the deep amber color a... Read More

  • Dönnhoff Riesling 2008

Tight on the nose with some oily, raw nut notes over a base of quartz and raw quince. Bright acidity cuts down the middle of the palate but the fruit seems to struggle to stay with it, falling away to the sides in the mouth. This is lean and focused but lacks a bit of snap. A lot of green apple, citrus and unripe apricot flavors are attractive, ... Read More

  • Dönnhoff H. Riesling Spätlese Nahe Norheimer Dellchen 2003

Very light and slightly alcoholic nose with a nice powdered gravel top note and some earthy apple and apple blossom notes accenting a core of light apricot fruit. This smells surprisingly tight and nervous. Lightly if obviously sweet in the mouth, this has plenty of acidity keeping things juicy and a nice light accent note of green apple with a ... Read More

  • Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Auslese 2003

Lightly evolved on the nose yet retaining fine minerality and nice apple blossom top notes over heirloom apple fruit. This is a bit thick but actually turns out to be quite agile in the mouth, with sufficient acidity to balance the sweetness and fine mineral cut. The flavors are both mineral and pollen in the mouth with a faint honeyed note appe... Read More
