Miljenko “Mike” Grgich first gained international recognition at the celebrated “Paris Tasting” of 1976. Then, in a now-historic blind tasting, a panel of eminent French judges swirled, sniffed, and sipped an array of the fabled white Burgundies of France and a small sampling of upstart Chardonnays from the Napa Valley. When their scores were tallied, the French judges were shocked: they had chosen Mike’s 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay as the finest white wine in the world. Mon Dieu! The results stunned the international wine establishment and immediately earned Mike a reputation as one of the greatest winemakers in the world. Now 87 years old, and still sporting his signature blue beret, Mike was inducted into the Vinter Hall of Fame in March 2008 in honor of his many contributions to the wine industry. While many other Napa wineries pursue strategies of expansion, Mike, along with his daughter, Violet, and his nephew, Ivo Jeramaz, prefer to stay small. Their aim, year Read more »

  • Hi all!Hoping to wade into interesting wine talk (and food talk).  Me, ... Me, ... in love with a Grgich Hills chard, it's just awesome, or a Kistler with roast chicken when I want to remember what that big California chard taste is all about.  Oh, and Finger Lakes in NY is not to be missed.  Lots of good new stuff there, though I have to say... • Grgich Hills Estate Napa Valley Fume Blanc Estate 2011

Very stark nose--steely more than fruity. On the palate a bit more fruit emerges--green apple and a bit of lemon. Apparent effervescence on the tip/edges of the tongue. Quite refreshing tartness. Something of a funky, moldy aftertaste is annoying and causes this to be marked down a notch. US$19.63 from Total Wine. Read More

  • Thank you GregT for the research and comments.  I am familiar with Mt Eden ... some high end bottles (Dunn, Grgich Hills, Duckhorn, Cakebread, Caymus..etc) to the normal $10-15 purchases everyone gathers.  I am interested in around the $20-30 range that will be able to sit and enjoy for years to come.  I have mainly cabs at this point and would... • Grgich Hills Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Estate Grown 1995

Nicely red colored with, thankfully, no brownishness indicative of oxidation. A fairly big nose, although with some volatility. Not terribly forceful on entry to the palate--only moderate berry/cassis flavors. As you might expect, very mild tannin. Some tartness makes me want to eat something with this. However, this one is probably past it... Read More

  • Hi, I am an accidental wine enthusiast. As part of a major remodeling project including our family room I revived my interest and enjoyment of wine. Our family room was redone using dark hickory planking and the room has a short wall next to our fireplace. This wall has always presented a challenge to make use of the space. I researched and sear... Read More
