The roots of Gray Monk Estate Winery began in the family. For generations, the Heiss family worked together to make their dreams of owning a vineyard into reality. Today, their slogan is “Generations of Commitment”, recognizing the years of working together as a family to see their dreams come true. Little did the drivers and thousands of spectators of the early 1960's Okanagan Sports Car Hillclimbs know when they raced or gambolled through the orchards of Camp Road, Okanagan Centre – that it would later become the site of one of B.C.'s most successful and earliest family estate wineries. Then along came the Heiss family, new to farming, but with a dream to grow grapes that made wine the equal of their European heritage. First, they had to grub out the old orchard trees, and then plant “Government Approved” Hybrid varietals - which never did achieve the objective. In frustration, they later re-grafted to European vinifera “noble” varietals, which few, at the time, believed would survive Read more »

  • Gray Monk Gewurztraminer 2015

    Snoothrank:

This wine - from a good and revered Okanagan producer - has all the usual lychee and pear on the nose (if subdued), and on the palate (off-dry), there is a slightly bitter, unripe lychee nut entry. The finish is also slightly bitter, but not obtrusive at this price point. Good value. 85. Read More

  • Gray Monk Pinot Blanc 2014

    Snoothrank:

I received this modestly priced Pinot Blanc from a family friend at a reception honouring a recently deceased relative. Since I had not had any wine from the Heiss family holdings in years, I looked forward to updating my knowledge of this beautiful vineyard and its produce. I was not disappointed: the wine is almost chardonnay-like with apple... Read More

  • Gray Monk Riesling 2011

    Snoothrank:

Don't let the price fool you; Gray Monk is an old hand in the BC Okanagan Valley... especially with the principal white varieties of Germany. Showing some of its age now, this wine has an inviting bouquet of apple, pear, a touch of petrol and star anise. On the palate we have apple pie and ginger with a smooth, balanced acidity and medium fini... Read More
