Founded in 1880, Geyser Peak Winery is one of California’s oldest and most award-winning wineries. Founded by Augustus Quitzow, the winery was built in 1882 in Geyserville, making it one of the pioneering California wineries of the time. Geyser Peak Winery consists of 5 vineyards, one of which is located in the Russian River Valley AVA, while the others are in Alexander Valley.

Since most of the grapes come from Alexander Valley, the growing regions have long ripening seasons. Alexander Valley is a great region for growing Cabernet Sauvignon vines, but Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc are also successfully grown. Ondine Chattan and Jaeson Mackura, winemakers for Geyser Peak Winery, are also behind the screw cap movement that is very controversial among wineries and consumers alike. All of their white wines are bottled using screw caps, or “Stelvin closures” as they are often called (Stelvin is actually a brand of screw caps, like Ziplock is a brand synonymous Read more »

  • Geyser Peak Devil's Inkstand Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2011

    Snoothrank:

Deep inky red color. Aromas are quite pronounced, with black currant, black cherry and blackberry fruit and an herbal note of eucalyptus. Very full mouthfeel, deep and rioe with blackberry fruit, cinnamon and clove, supple tannins, black olive and more than a hint of toast. Some coffee notes, dark cacao nibs and overall an elegant presentation d... Read More

  • Geyser Peak Pinot Noir Pluto's Fury 2012

    Snoothrank:

There's a fair bit of complexity in the herbal cherry aromas of this Pinot. There's a bit of sage, cranberry and raspberry as well. Elegant and rosy in the mouth, with more cherry flavors, cinnamon and crushed violets. Really a lovely, delicate and well balanced wine with excellent structure and minerality. Read More

  • Geyser Peak Devil's Inkstand 2011

    Snoothrank:

Dark black fruit aromas of black currant, blackberry, and cinnamon with some wooded aromas of cedar and forest floor. A strong blend of Cabernet and Petit Verdot, this wine has a fair bit of structure and good fruit flavors, with some savory notes of teriyaki and black olive, clove, cinnamon, black currant and a long finish with chocolate coffee... • Geyser Peak Pinot Grigio California 2012

    Snoothrank:

A bit earthy with hints of dried fruit and lemon curd on the nose. This smells a lot like a lemon square. A hint of sweetness early on the palate is followed by good acids that help keep this from oozing across the palate and losing its shape. The fruit shows a bit of a dried fruit, dried citrus peel character along with rich hints of peach and ... Read More

  • I’ve been through this so many times before that it becomes rote. The differences between Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio. Well, there really aren’t any, when we are referring to the grapes. One is the name in French while the other is the name in Italian. When it comes to the wines though, there remains some distinction, though that is disappearing... Read More

  • Geyser Peak Uncensored Red Blend 2010

    Snoothrank:

A wonderful blend of Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, Petite Sirah, Cabernet, Tannat, Petite Verdot, and Zinfandel. This was great with gourmet flat bread pizza. The blend really works and is very enjoyable. Some depth and tang provide a great base for the wine that balances out rather nicely at this very inexpensive price point, One of the best valued i... • Geyser Peak Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County 2009

    Snoothrank:

A nice Alexander Valley Cabernet. The tannins are there but balanced. there is some backbone and structure to this wine....along with a very beautiful color of deep crimson. This is a very good value for what you actually pay. The 2009 was held back an additional year in bottle storage before it was released. Nice value! Read More

  • Who else is still drinking the 1996 California cabs?  I had yet another bottle on Memorial Day and loved it.  Altamura '96 was lovely. Previously I've loved the 1996 BV GdLatour.  As we know, 1997 amazed people but has largely faded early. Two questions:1. Which of the 2000s vintages will age like the 96s have done so gracefully?2. Which 1996s i... Read More
