This year the Gainey family celebrates their 47th year of farming and ranching in Santa Barbara County. Since the beginning, it has always been the land and its potential that has guided the family. In 1962, Dan C. and his son Dan J. Gainey purchased an 1800 acre ranch on the eastern end of the Santa Ynez Valley. With over 1000 acres of rangeland devoted to cattle, 600 acres of farmland, 100 acres of Arabian horses facilities and 100 acres of vineyards, the Gainey Ranch was and still is the largest diversified farming operation in the valley. In the early 1980’s, Dan J. and his son Dan H. became convinced that the unique geographical and climatical conditions of the area gave it the potential to produce world class wines. They planted 50 acres in 1983 and opened their Spanish style winery in 1984. The winery quickly became one of the most popular wineries to visit in the area and was named as “one of the best wineries to visit on California’s Central Coast” by Wine Spectator magazine. Gainey Vineyard on Snooth

  • With yesterday’s official beginning of summer, it's about time I take a ... a ... freshness. 92pts 2008 Gainey Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay 13.9% This has an attractive almost spearminty edge to the ripe apple and peach fruit tones. With air it shows a bit more sweetness and a light toasty edge.  On entry this is firm and focused with ... Read More

  • Gainey Chardonnay Santa Barbara County Limited Selection 2008

    Snoothrank:

This has an attractive almost spearminty edge to the ripe apple and peach fruit tones. With air it shows a bit more sweetness and a light toasty edge. On entry this is firm and focused with deep flavors of pineapple, ripe peach, and lightly pastry tones. This is quite well balanced with gentle richness but not a ton of weight and it certainly i... Steely apple aromas and puckering acidity with a good bit of heat give way to a slightly mealy, yeasty finish. Read More

  • Gainey Chardonnay Santa Barbara County Limited Selection 2008

    Snoothrank:

This is a serious Chard. There's a bit of heat on the nose, and then big, rich oak -- it's bold, but nicely integrated. Chalky lime and slate give way to great, juicy lemon and field grass on the palate. Read More

  • I experimented with some lamb loin this evening and need some input. I pan seared and oven roasted the loin rubbed with fresh rosemary, thyme, oregano salt pepper and olive oil. I served it with a risotto that I made with broth & red wine and then some fresh mint in the final minute of cooking. The dish tasted good but was screaming for a couple... Read More

  • Gainey Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills Sta. Rita Hills 2004

    Snoothrank:

The Gainey Pinot Noir ('06) was the best wine of the year for us. It is not necessarily a great value, given the comparatively high price, but it certainly satisfies even the most sophisticated palate. By the way, I have absolutely no connection whatsoever with this winemaker or any of its employees. Read More
