The Conterno family, proprietors of the Azienda Agricola Sciulun, have been producing wines of uncommon elegance and prestige for several generations. The estate of around twenty-five acres of vineyards is located in the heart of the Langhe hills, in the Bussia area of the village of Monforte d'Alba. The vines are tended following environmentally-friendly, traditional methods, though none of the benefits made available by modern technology are overlooked. The composition of the soil and the lie of the land, along with the area's outstanding microclimate, all contribute to the unique qualities of these wines. • Some very tempting offerings here. Well organized listing, too. Barolo by Commune It’s conventional wisdom (repeated to the point of cliché) that each of the towns in the Barolo zone produce wine of specific character, a reflection of local geology and other factors. And generally speaking an educated taster has a decent chance of telling Serral... Read More

  • A couple of ways to look at this pre-Christmas offer:1) why spend any money on Napa reds when you can get these bottles, aged for you already, at these prices?2) you can put together your own Produttori del Barbaresco verticals that'd knock the socks off the Valkyrie serving wenches pouring at the tables in Valhalla.  Barbaresco from the Big Cel... • So what’s not to like? 2010 Barolo is in the hype machine right now and as much as i would like to say that they hype machine is in overdrive, which it perennially is, this is one time where much might be warranted. that’s not to say that 2010 is a universally fabulous vintage. It simply is not with more than a handful of wines showing under-rip... Read More

  • Franco Conterno Barolo Bussia Munie 2006

    Snoothrank:

Franco Conterno "Bussia Munie" -- Raw, sweet, cola, syrup-medicinal, very fresh in the mouth. Probably has some nice fruit as there are some inner-mouth perfumes but tough and ungenerous today, with a hint of herb, drying tannins in the finish. Read More

  • Franco Conterno Barolo Bussia Munie 2004

    Snoothrank:

This opened slowly with a touch of torrefaction on the nose over a bed of almost weedy herbal components. With air the weediness took on a decidedly floral note and joined delicate notes of macerating cherry on the nose. What started as an earthy, chewy, yet short mouthfeel blossomed into a lovely rich mouthful of fruit with big cherry tones an... Read More
