Read moreTwo weeks ago ago I visited several wineries or rather 'bodegas' in the Mendoza region. I had a incredible mind-expanding experience! The Mendoza region is breathtaking with the snowcapped Andes in the background. The people are warm and welcoming. And the wine tasting experience at each bodega were impressive! The area is vast so you may want to visit 'bodegas' in the Lujan de Cuyo and Maipu areas, about 15-30 mins from the city. If you have time, the Uco Valley is worth the 1 hour drive. They have several state-of-the art wineries, with an impressive architecture, some with art museums. The bodegas mentioned above are worthwhile. In addition, these are some outstanding wineries to visit. Lujan de Cuyo - Achaval-Ferrer - a must on anyones list! A boutique winery that produces outstanding wines year after year with ratings of 94 and above. - Catena Zapata - Bressia - Bodega Ruca Malen - A beautiful place to have an outstading five-course lunch with each plate paired to their delicous wines from whites to reds. Maipu - Benegas Lynch - Built in 1901, this is one of the oldest wineries.. Uco Valley - Salestein - O'Fournier - another fantastic place to have lunch - Bodega La Azul Because most bodegas require reservations and we wanted to visit specific bodegas, we used the services of ISC Viajes (http://www.iscviajes.com.ar/quienessomos.asp). A driver and English speaking guide drove us to the wineries. The tour to the Uco Valley we did it with Ampora Wine Tours (http://www.mendozawinetours.com), which I highly recommend too. To plan our trip to Buenos Aires and the Mendoza region, I found very useful the book Argentina 2009 by Frommer. He provides a comprehensive description of the region, wineries, restaurants, hotels, and interesting places to visit. If you are using a domestic airline to arrive at Mendoza, be aware that baggage allowance by domestic airlines are much lower than international flights. This is good to know if you are planning to purchase wine. Incidentally, the best prices are found at the bodegas.    (hide)
