Fontanafredda is located in the heart of the Langhe, a world of hills dating backto very ancient times which has always been a prime growing area for great wines, particularly rich, powerful reds. Ourvineyards lie on mostly evenly-contoured hillsides and rounded ridges at an altitude of between 200 and 400 metres. The texture of the mainly calcareous soils can differ with in the space of just a few dozen metres: at times loose, with a sand content approaching even 50 at others firmer, with a higher proportion of silt, and above-all clay. – Description from JelaDragoljevic

  • I'm saving that Fontanafredda for a dinner with some wine friends, Michelle Armour and Tina Caputo, who want to understand more about Italian wine.  The meal I have planned is a short rib lasagna.  That wine wants meats, braised especially, and probably isn't the ideal mate for acidic tomato sauces, but good on you for opening it.  I worry about... • Fontanafreddo Vigna la Villa Paiagallo Barolo 1998

    Snoothrank:

A wine that doesnt smack you in the face with a single dimension. Very tame fruitmuch like raisins without the sweetness. Earthiness that suggests a rustic wine. Still firm tannin but supported by excellent acid. Im glad I have another bottle, and it can wait another decade for me. Read More

  • Okay, so I have been away, but I am really excited about those Fenocchio Bussia ... I've got that '98 Fontanafredda Paiagallo, '00 Aldo Conterno Granbussia, and a hodgepodge of '04-'06-'07 Barolos.  But I did go long on '10s and I also agree that the '11s will probably drink better early. Speaking of Barbarescos, I asked Jamie and Chambers will... • Fontanafredda Serralunga d'Alba Barolo 2009

    Snoothrank:

Not bad but not great Barolo. Somewhat light in color and flavor. There's a bit of cranberry on the nose with some cranberry, red and black cherry on the palate. The acidity is a bit muted and the finish a tad short. Read More
