As nursery owners in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Walt and Joan Flowers had long dreamed of combining their love of wine with their passion for agriculture. They knew they wanted to produce their favorite varietals, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir; what they didn't know was that their path would eventually lead them across country to Northern California's rugged Sonoma Coast. After responding to a small classified ad in a national wine publication, that's exactly where they landed. In 1989, after many information-gathering trips to Napa and Sonoma, Walt and Joan purchased 321 acres, including a ridge top, high above the Pacific Ocean on the northern Sonoma Coast. With the same determination they drew on to build their successful nursery business; the Flowers proceeded with the dream of producing their favorite cool-climate varietals in a place they believed uniquely suited to growing them. Today, Flowers Winery produces 15,000 cases of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from its two estate properties, Camp Meeting Read more »

  • Thanksgiving wine pairing can be tough. With tons of different flavors and lots of different palates at the table, it's downright difficult, if not impossible, to find the perfect wine. Pinot Noir, Riesling and Beaujolais are always near the top of the most recommended list, while Carmenere and Gewurztraminer  seem to be this year's trendy picks... Read More

  • Long before grapevines were planted on the hilltop at Buttonwood Farm Winery & Vineyard, it was home to horses, goats, and chickens; trees bearing fruit, nuts, and olives; and gardens filled with vegetables, herbs, and flowers. And long before the words “sustainable” and “organic” were part of the common vernacular, they were ardently practiced ... Read More

  • Flowers Vineyard Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2012

    Snoothrank:

Excellent Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. Extremely well balanced with lemon, a touch of butterscotch, vibrant acidity and a fairly long finish. Read More

  • Flowers Vineyard Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2012

    Snoothrank:

Bright nose with hints of tropical fruit. Fairly subtle on the palate. Fruit flavors of banana and citrus. Citrus implies acid. So, this wine has an understandable brightness and refreshing quality. A very quick finish leaves the palate completely clean. A predictably solid wine from a solid maker. Read More

  • Napa Valley grape growers and winemakers wore out their worry beads in 2011. Rain came early, often and didn’t want to go away. It was a cool year as well, forcing winemakers to spend even more time walking the vineyards than usual. Napa Valley is accustomed to dry, warm, sunny growing seasons. It’s Cabernet Sauvignon wines are widely known for ... Read More

  • To welcome fall, and without a doubt the season has arrived, like clockwork, the moment our Labor Day weekend had wrapped up, I have always had a bit of a tradition of opening some Barbaresco. While my heart may belong to Barolo, the somewhat more elegant and more approachable wines of Barbaresco are perfect for times when you are looking for so... Read More

  • In a world where extremes are becoming the paradigms for perfection its a little surprising that one doesn’t hear much of the wines of Saxony. Strike that. One doesn’t hear anything about these wines. And that is not surprising because the production is tiny and the wines almost all consumed locally. But you should be hearing about these wines, ... • So, I finally re-introduced myself to Zinfandel.  I bought a half bottle of Seghesio Sonoma '12.  I decantered it for 1 hour and ate it with spaghetti w/tomato-basil sauce.  The wine was dominated by the alcohol -- 14.8% -- and while I tasted black fruit and a very interesting roasted sage note on the mid-palate, the alcohol drive of the wine ma... • I believe that folks might already have gleaned that I am somewhat of a Zinfandel fanatic but some of my previous posts. In truth my job has resulted in my drinking less, not more Zin but left to my own devises that would not be the case. Zinfandel remains for me the greatest American wine, both for the sheer joyousness of the wine and the histo... Read More

  • Value among wines is of course relative, though there are a few factors that help keep prices down and values compelling. For example, the use of oak barrels adds to the cost of a bottle of wine and if you are able to move wines out of the winery quickly, and crop your vines so that they provide a robust yield, while not impacting quality of cou...
