As nursery owners in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Walt and Joan Flowers had long dreamed of combining their love of wine with their passion for agriculture. They knew they wanted to produce their favorite varietals, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir; what they didn't know was that their path would eventually lead them across country to Northern California's rugged Sonoma Coast. After responding to a small classified ad in a national wine publication, that's exactly where they landed. In 1989, after many information-gathering trips to Napa and Sonoma, Walt and Joan purchased 321 acres, including a ridge top, high above the Pacific Ocean on the northern Sonoma Coast. With the same determination they drew on to build their successful nursery business; the Flowers proceeded with the dream of producing their favorite cool-climate varietals in a place they believed uniquely suited to growing them. • I actually know most of the wines. And I'd go with Hungarian wine since that's what the food is. It's not like there's any magical pairing mind you, but what the hell.I'd start with the goose and pork pate. Their fish dishes are often rather disappointing to me, except for the things like pickled herring, which just awful with wine, although del... Read More

  • Haven't put up one of these in awhile. This time will make things more specific and real, in that you will need to imagine you're hosting a meal at this restaurant in London's Soho. It's something I did a few times during my period of busy London business visits at the end of the '80s through early last decade. The first time I sweated a bit bec... Read More

  • Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2014

Very floral nose. Lots of fruit on entrytable grapes, lemon. Some spiciness on the rear palate. Light on oak. Acid tartness is more apparent than butter. Pleasant enough wine. Read More

  • White wines are a summer classic, but it has been a long summer. There is a good chance that you are surfeit with white wine by now. Ultra-hip rosé and orange wines aren’t your only options. Be a true trendsetter and cozy up with a late summer red. Summer calls for diaphanous red wine grapes that allow fresh fruits to shine without the deep, dar... Read More

  • August is here -- along with warm, steamy weather for most of the country. For some that means switching over to chilled cocktails or beer. What it should really mean for wine drinkers is carefully selecting wines that are well made, delicious, value driven and refreshing. • Hi everyone.  This is my first post on the boards.  My wife and I are doing a long weekend in Healdsburg (Jan 15-17) and Yountville (Jan 17-19) over MLK weekend and were looking for some recommendations on wineries to visit.  We tend to like more full bodied red wines, but are open to other wines as well. We are from New York and want to focus o... Read More

  • Petite Sirah has the stuffing to hold up to extended oak aging. It can also be made in a lighter, fruit-forward, early drinking style. As a result, a survey of current release Petite Sirah from several producers might easily span four or more vintages.
