Read moreWith all of these great recommendations, I almost didn't respond, but heck - im not one to not throw my 2 cents in!! So here goes - sticking in the $25 range.. 1. Zinfandel (any of the ones mentioned by Chadrich are great choices) 2. I agree wholeheartedly with GDP about Montepulciano. It's one of my favorites with stew (La Valentina is a good choice here) 3. Primitivo, like Zin, goes great with stew and you can find some great values out there (e.g., Tormaresca or A-Mano) 4. California Syrah does really well (Cline and Bonny Doon) 5. Petite Syrah also does well - but only with the heartiest of stews (Rosenblum) and 6. you can find some pretty decent Cotes du Rhone at $25 or less that pair really well with stews. All this talk of beef stew is making me hungry... Cheers!    (hide)

It holds onto the inside of your mouth, which is only a problem if you don't have some water to wash it the rest of the way down... but don't do that in a hurry.   Fattoria la Valentina Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2002

  Still drinking exceptionally well. Enjoyed with dinner of Szechuan Green Beans, Chow Fun and London Broil. It married perfectly. It is unusual to find a wine that tastes great with spicy food, but this one does. I feel this wine is especially suited to accompanying food. [89]

  Fattoria la Valentina Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2002

  Enjoyed 2 bottles with friends to accompany a "Beef Barolo" Italian dinner. The wine is in a really good place right now. It proved to be an outstanding accompaniment to the main dish which was basically a beef roast braised in a full bottle of Barolo wine. [90]
