United States

Redwood Valley covers about 35 square miles and its wineries and vineyards produce premium to ultra premium varietal wines distributed around the world. There are over 900 acres of white wine grapes and over 1500 of red varietals planted in the Valley. Early settlers arrived in Redwood Valley in the mid 1850s, and there was a thriving community by 1900. As early as the 1870s, grape growing and wine making were an important part of the economy and culture of Redwood Valley. One of the earliest published mentions of Redwood Valley as a grape growing region was in a March 7, 1913, article in the Ukiah Republican Press (1885-1954), which described Redwood Valley as “admirably adapted for the grape and fruit land in Northern California.” – Description from Alejandro

  • Earlier this year I was able to spend a couple of weeks in Piedmont. Of course my mission there was to asses the upcoming 2010 and 2011 Barolo and Barbaresco wines, an article which is nearing completion, but today I wanted to focus on wines that are more appropriate to the season. While I love Nebbiolo based wines , they are not necessarily an ... Read More

  • California, the land of sunshine, free spirits, and big wines. Right? Yes, of course, all that is true but today we are seeing that free spirited attitude change the paradigm for wine production. Some might say that we are witnessing a return to a different style of wine. Fresher, lower in alcohol and having more in common with wines produced se... Read More

  • Not only is Cabernet Sauvignon the most popular red wine, it’s also one that is best suited to gift giving. It’s a wine that everyone knows and understands. Big, rich and bold, it’s the archetype of red wines that is perfect for the cooler months that lie ahead. While Cabernet does get a bit of a bad rap as being ubiquitous, that doesn’t mean th... • I've had  a love/hate relationship with Dolcetto for years now. People tend to be surprised when I tell them that I don't really like Dolcetto, and don't really buy much. What I really should have been saying for the past decade or so was that I didn't like the direction Dolcetto had taken, and as so often happens with these things the pendulum ... Read More

  • I was fortunate enough to be invited to the recent 2010 International Pinot Noir Celebration held, as always, on the lovely campus of Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon. The theme for this year’s event was "Wine is Food," and I would be hard pressed to come up with a more appropriate theme. From the brilliant Pinot Noir and lamb pairing... Read More
