Just five miles from the Pacific Ocean, Edna Valley Vineyard has one of the longest and coolest growing seasons in California. Its location in one of the state's few east/west-oriented valleys allows nighttime coastal fog to move inland, cooling the grapes after a long day in the sunlight, so that they slowly mature while retaining sufficient acidity. The vineyard's unique site consists of layers of clay and volcanic rock over ancient ocean subsoil. We are a partnership between Paragon Vineyard Company, which is owned by the Niven family, and Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines. The Niven's planted Paragon, our estate vineyard, in the early 1970s and the Chalone Wine Group joined with the family to establish a partnership as Edna Valley Vineyard in 1980.Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines purchased the Chalone Wine Group in 2005. – Description from JelaDragoljevic

Edna Valley Vineyard on Snooth

  • Edna Valley Vineyard Merlot 2012

    Snoothrank:

Opens with some green pepper and raspberry, Rather thin and not quite a mouthful and somewhat disappointing, but after sitting in the glass a bit, becomes deeper, more complex, with more pronounced jam and preserves flavors and cocoa. Turns out to be not too bad and at the price point, a good deal. Read More

  • Fox, we are having guests, tonight, and I was thinking of offering that Brooks.  It will be a game time decision. Al, I enjoy all Keenan wines, and, in fact, as Fox has suggested, the Syrah is really not my favorite.  He is right about their Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.  They actually have two Merlot bottlings--Napa Valley and Carneros.  I pre... • I love N. Rhone Syrah.  It's my favorite red wine in France.  But the acreage of the region is so small and the area that provide its best wines even smaller, that prices have hit the roof.  Sure, there are a few St. Josephs and Crozes-Hermitages that come in around $25, but those are either made for earlier drinking and a lot less thrilling wit... • Yup, it was Mauritson, Fox.  Oh boy, fun tonight.  Staying on the Syrah topic, today's delivery included the '12 Madrone Spring, but I also picked the '12 Madrone Spring PS which I am pretty excited to try.On the Central Coast thing, I might fight you a bit on that.  I have never tried a Stolpman.  So, I really don't have a vote, there, but I do... • Hi all!Hoping to wade into interesting wine talk (and food talk).  Me, I've been seriously enjoying and exploring wine for just over 20 years. On the red side, right now I'm partial to wines from Spain and the Rhone valley, but other loves are Oregon pinots, really good Italian wines (yes, it's endless, but that's the fun), and wanting to try mu...
