The Guigal domain was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the ancient village of Ampuis, home of the wines of the Côte-Rôtie. In these vineyards of over 2400 years old you can still see the small terraced walls characteristic of the Roman period. Etienne Guigal arrived in this region in 1923 at the age of 14. He made wine over 67 vintages and, at the beginning of his career, participated in the development of the Vidal-Fleury establishment. Despite his young age, Marcel Guigal took over from his father in 1961 when the latter was victim to a brutal illness rendering him blind. Marcel’s hard work and perseverance enabled the Guigals to buy out Vidal-Fleury in 1984, although the establishment retains its own identity and commercial autonomy. In 2000, the Guigals purchased the Jean-Louis GRIPPAT estate in Saint-Joseph and Hermitage as well as the Domaine de VALLOUIT in Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. In the cellars of the GUIGAL estate in Ampuis, Read more »

  • E. Guigal Cotes du Rhone Red 2010

    Snoothrank:

    E. Guigal is a northern Rhone specialist who, in the process of producing this CdR, adds up to 50% Syrah. The beautiful raspberry, mushroom, black pepper and earth on the nose promises considerable elegance and one is not disappointed; on the palate, this wine exudes finesse and elegance with steely red fruit and celery stalk. Has the structure... Read More

Probably corked. Very little fruit, was smooth with nice acidity and strong tannins on the finish. Really disappointed. Read More

  • E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône 2010

    Snoothrank:

Blend of 49% Syrah, 48% Grenache and 3% Mourvedre with an abv of 14%. Dark red in the glass and is full bodied. It is old world in style with impressive balance. A step above the usual CdR. Read More

  • Hey everyone, what are some of your favorite 'everyday' or M-F types of wines to accompany a regular dinner?  I personally have enjoyed the Montoya Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, and I usually pick it up from Total Wines out here in Virginia.  This is one of those fruit-forward cabs that isn't too complex for me to appreciate, and it usually cost... • I love N. Rhone Syrah.  It's my favorite red wine in France.  But the acreage of the region is so small and the area that provide its best wines even smaller, that prices have hit the roof.  Sure, there are a few St. Josephs and Crozes-Hermitages that come in around $25, but those are either made for earlier drinking and a lot less thrilling wit... • We had the '06 Cotes du Rhone from Guigal at our wedding. It went really well with about 60% of the hors d'oeuvres and was enjoyed by folks who typically stick with the whites. Great backbone to it without being overly tanic.
