The annual cycle of work, parallel with cycle of nature, consists of a number of interventions, comprising biological treatments against the diseases and others aiming at improving the quality. mong the latter, the pruning is particularly decisive. Too severe, it prevents the harmonious development of the vine, insufficient, the vine will overproduce unripen grapes. A this moment, the presence of Paul’s grandson Pierre-Paul Humbrecht, is of utmost importance to the vineyard, to prune correctly and at the right time. Given unfavourable climatic conditions, the harvest may suffer but when the seasons flow normally the right pruning will be rewarded by a juice of very high quality. hen the vine has had its budburst, the disbudding (selection of branches) and desuckering (supression of the growths resulting from sucker from the trunk), are made manually to avoid any harmful effect to the vine. During the bloom, trimming consists in shortening the end of the branches leaving just the right quantity Read more »

  • Like many foodies, I adore oysters on the half shell. One of my first jobs working in a professional kitchen as a kid, after I was promoted from the pot sink, was shucking oysters and serving them iced on the half shell. I got very adept at opening them very quickly – but of course, who doesn’t prefer to have someone open their oysters for them?... Read More

  • Zind-Humbrecht White Blend Zind 2005

    Snoothrank:

Fantastic white Alsace blend of chardonnay and auxerrois. For an '05 this is drinking great right now! Beautiful golden color, nose of creamy lemon pith and honey. On the palate there's more of that creamy lemon cheesecake along with ripe golden delicious apple, dried apricot, creme brulee, and some fine acidity to balance out the fruit. Read More

  • Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Zind 2011

    Snoothrank:

Brilliant clarity. Apple and vanilla nose with hints of tropical notes. Ample acidity - Almost effervescent. A little on the sweet side, but not nearly as much as I'd expect from the thick tears. Like the lemonade of Pinot Gris - both sweet and tart, round and lean. Read More

  • Sometimes grey matters. No pun intended. In this case it happens to matter a lot, yet in a very specific way. I recently wrote about Value Pinot Gris, and $20 Pinot Gris, but these were Gris in name only. Today I present a very modest selection of Pinot Gris, though in this case the wines are Alsace Pinot Gris and these are so distinctively diff... Read More

  • Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Alsace Pinot Gris Calcaire 2010

    Snoothrank:

Floral, meaty and spicy on the nose with a real deep base of savory butchers wax, green plum jam, and melon notes topped with hints of pineapple and white pepper. Green and tart on entry, then this quietly gains abit of balancing sweetness in the mouth with a pithy citrus note framing the core of green plummy fruit. Theres an interesting woody p... Read More

  • Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Turkheim France Alsace Alsace Aoc White 2004

    Snoothrank:

Their 2004 is deep gold in color, dry and 14% Alc. It is characterized by honey and resin notes but is lacking in fruit. 2004 is not known as a great vintage and this wine reflects that. It is slightly oxidized, showing that it should have been consumed 5 years ago. I have only tasted two bone dry Rieslings that were good and this is not one of ... Read More

  • Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Alsace Aoc Herrenweg de Turckheim 2007

    Snoothrank:

An "Indice 4", this wine is actually considered "sweet" by Olivier. Fair enough...but it was so lovely, I had to include it in this list. Everything Gewurz should be - rosewater and lychee on the palate with a hint of unctuousness that never turns cloying. Read More

  • I've just opened a bottle of Z-H Herrenweg de Turckheim GW 2006. Aroma is fine, as official descriptions, taste is already undefinible, but also in the line with what I've been reading about. The point that surprised me was the colour! Very dark old golden, almost red. Is it ok, it's the expected? Rodrigo Britto rbrittos@terra.com.br
