The Story:
Renowned Rhone Valley innovator Michel Chapoutier unlocks the potential of soil and sun in Victoria, Australia.
Vineyard: When Michel saw Malakoff he said “Greatness is possible here.” The Lieu Dit Malakoff Shiraz is a single vineyard with 46 planted acres on an Eastern facing slope. The Shiraz-Viognier is grown further south on the Geelong peninsula.
Soil: At Malakoff, red schist allows deep root penetration and contains high levels of iron. The schist combines with quartz which adds flinty character and aromas of white peppercorn.
Climate: Continental with extreme daily swings in temperature (can change 45⁰ F to 100⁰ F) which allows a later harvest than is typical in the region for enhanced ripeness that preserves complex aromas and flavors. The fruit for Shiraz Viognier comes from the more moderate Geelong peninsula with cooling maritime breezes.
