Read morefor sry828: are you a smoker? this seriously inhibits your ability to smell ... fat wine glass. if you don't have any, a rocks glass will do. just don't fill one of those tiny cheap applebee's wine glasses to the rim - wine needs air/space in order for you to detect its bouquet. finally, know this: our sense of smell fatigues. so three or four sniffs in you can't smell what you did on the first inhale. at aveda, we would take clients on a sensory of journey of single notes (ie lavendar, rose, sandalwood, vanilla, etc) one at a time. in between inhales, we would have the clent smell fresh coffee beans - it restores your snese of smell somehow!   good luck. i hope this helps. welcome to the wonderful journey that is wine    (hide)

  Just another point before this signing off: I have had some LBV as old as 30 years, but when you get beyond a certain age, waiting becomes an issue... :-)

  Kyle, For what it's worth, I think you could drink today (if your thirst is ... - as long as you do not have too warm a storage area. LBV does not last quite as long as regular vintage - so the experts say - but you can leave it for a few moons yet, I think.  Check the specs on... I will try my favorite wine merchant in Bellingham WA ... in South Australia.  I have had both good experiences with everyday and premium wines from Grenanche, but just don't feel the variety can match the finesse and power of Syrah/Shiraz - at least, not ordinarily.  But I shall be seeking out some (very) old vines Australian Grenache at my next tasting with more than the usual enthusiasm. I'm pretty certain not to be disappointed. On another note, I may (fairly) soon make an arduous plane flight to what was once known as the ends of the earth ( c.f. the trilogy by the late British author William Golding) so it is good to know that snooth is truly a global network    (hide)

My father and I are experimenting with growing ... to see how the vines have stood up to this year's winter, which has been unusually cold and snowy with temperatures reaching down to -16 on the west coast, which is quite unusual. Hopefully the snow will have insulated the lower stem and root systems.If all goes well, we would like to try out some vitis vinifera varieties next year. Perhaps riesling or even Cab and pinot. From our experience they will probably survive the winters here, but the big question is: will they be able to ripen before the frost sets in around October/ November...?We have a south-sloping field, starting right from the fjord, with a lot of sun exposure. Sunlight in summers can be a good 20 hours on clear days, perhaps compensating to some degree for the lack of intensity in light and heat?Meanwhile, I am enjoying my trusted zinfandel here in Oslo - a burst of summer in all the snow    (hide)

  You can quote whomever you like.  To my nose, and from my education, you ... acid, ethyl acetate,etc. DO have smells.  But you can't tell how acidic a wine is based solely on smell. Again, I'm not trying to be a jerk.  I just don't want the newbs getting incorrect info

  I'm all in favour of half bottles or the 50cl bottle.  We use the gas ... it's been opened.  I have just a glass left in the decanter from two days ago and it's smelling great.  Can't wait to finish it off tonight.
