Aimé SABON comes back from his military duty in 1967 and takes over his father's vineyards (who was bringing his grapes into cooperative cave) and father-in-law's vineyards (who was selling the wine). He builds his cave in 1973 and thus creates the domain of La Janasse, from the name of family camp located in Courthezon. His ambition will be to enlarge the domain by acquiring new vineyards of different varieties, going from 15 ha to 55 ha nowadays. In 1991, after a BTA in winemaking and oenology at Beaune and a BTS in marketing at Macon, Christophe joins his father who leaves him the responsability of the cave. He will create the different vintages and develop the marketing of the domain. Isabelle, the sister of Christophe and also oenologist, joins the team in 2001. Nowadays, all SABON family members work together on the domain : * Aimé SABON : vineyards * Hélène SABON : accountancy - administrative * Isabelle SABON : marketing - vinification * Christophe SABON : vineyards - vinification Read more »

  • Cotes du Rhone Villages les Garrigues Janasse 91 2012

Purchased this '12 while we were in Provence in 2014 so it's been stored properly. Just the slightest of bricking on the edges. The nose gives plenty of ripe black cherry and just the slightest hint of menthol. More black cherry on the palate layered with cigar box, bitter chocolate all wrapped up with a good bit of acid and fine grained tannin... Read More

  • One of the few real bargains left in France are found in the southern Rhone and Bouche du Rhône and fall under the appellation Cotes du Rhône and Cotes du Rhône-Villages.  These wines are delicious whether red or white, and are still affordable at good price to quality ratios.  Their copies in Australia, South Africa, Australia and North America... • Domaine de la Janasse le Chastelet Cotes du Rhone 2012

Absolutely fantastic Cotes du Rhone red blend from Domaine Janasse. Perfume on the nose, layers of tangy black and creamy blue berries, sharp and crisp acidity, a touch of black pepper on the back end. This was a steal when we were in Provence at the winery - 9.5 euros! Read More

  • Sorry, haven't been on here for a couple days so I thought it was time to ... to ... stop was Domaine de la Janasse which was a bit more laid back than Beaucastel. Again, a tour of the winery and barrel rooms ending with quite a few (13+) wines to taste. Two whites, two roses and nine reds. Again the whites were rich yet lively with round sto... Read More

  • I love N. Rhone Syrah.  It's my favorite red wine in France.  But the acreage of the region is so small and the area that provide its best wines even smaller, that prices have hit the roof.  Sure, there are a few St. Josephs and Crozes-Hermitages that come in around $25, but those are either made for earlier drinking and a lot less thrilling wit...
