Named 2007 Winemaker of the Year by the Sonoma County Harvest Fair, winemaker Michael Loykasek has been blazing new trails throughout California for the past two decades. Fresh out of U.C. Davis with a degree in enology in 1983, Mike spent 5 years developing his winemaking style in Paso Robles. From there he headed the winemaking program at Meeker Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. After leaving Meeker, Mike headed up winemaking at Armida Winery. After many successful years making wine Mike decided it was time to let the Dark Horse out of the barn, so to speak. And ever since, he's been hittin' the trails with the Dark Horse. The concept is simple: take small lots of exceptional wine and put it in a package that folks can't help but notice...and have some fun with it along the way! www.darkhorsewine.com PRESS 92 points! Wine Spectator names Dark Horse 2005 Dry Creek Zin, Treborce Vineyard, top-rated California Zinfandel. Featured in BOTH May 2008 and June 30 edition! Dallas Morning News says... "[2005 Treborce Zin] It's a big, juicy mouthful of dark berry and cherry flavors laced with wild herb and pepper notes." James Laube says... "Dark Horse Zin in the Winner's Circle"

Dark Horse Wine on Snooth

  • I´ve read a lot lately on biodynamic wines and how the position of the moon and other things can affect the vines growth or even the wine tasting, mostly on phylosophical grounds believing that "Biodynamics takes organic farming practices and wraps them as broader conception of the farm / the vineyard as a coherent organism, where inputs and out... • Agustin Cubero Syrah Calatayud Unus 2006

    Snoothrank:

From Bodegas Agustin Cubero in the Calatayud region of Spain comes this VERY dark, VERY opaque, VERY purple wine that is made from 100% Syrah grapes. On the nose- rich aromas of barnyard, bacon, horse and varnish, and flavors of black currant with a citrus edge, then emerging bursts of chalky violets and roasted peppers. Reminiscent of a Sicilian... Read More

  • Well I have plans to include several Syrahs in this thread over the next 2 weeks but let me begin with one of my favorite Syrah producers. J L Chave and his lovely 1996 Hermitage:Richly aromatic from the moment this is opened offering up an array of gamy tones to the earthy, blackberry fruit. Integrated in the mouth with the acidity seemingly qu... Read More
