Named 2007 Winemaker of the Year by the Sonoma County Harvest Fair, winemaker Michael Loykasek has been blazing new trails throughout California for the past two decades. Fresh out of U.C. Davis with a degree in enology in 1983, Mike spent 5 years developing his winemaking style in Paso Robles. From there he headed the winemaking program at Meeker Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. After leaving Meeker, Mike headed up winemaking at Armida Winery. After many successful years making wine Mike decided it was time to let the Dark Horse out of the barn, so to speak. And ever since, he's been hittin' the trails with the Dark Horse. The concept is simple: take small lots of exceptional wine and put it in a package that folks can't help but notice...and have some fun with it along the way! www.darkhorsewine.com PRESS 92 points! Wine Spectator names Dark Horse 2005 Dry Creek Zin, Treborce Vineyard, top-rated California Zinfandel. Featured in BOTH May 2008 and June 30 edition! Dallas Morning News says... • The unfortunate thing, is that I seem to have lost some of my notes.  I suppose that happens with wine consumption. Anyway, we began the day with a drive through St. Helena up the mountain to Pride Mountain Vineyards, as my friend had arranged another tasting for us.  We were greeted with a small pour of the chardonnay and once our group was com... • Panther Creek Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Winemaker's Cuvée 2006

Dark, brooding red with a nose of sweet strawberry with some tobacco and leather - but not the sweaty, horse-harness leather we love to hate in these New World wines. Good depth and meat upon entry with chocolate cream and strawberries dominating the flavor profile. Very well structured and balanced with ability to age an additional 4-5 years.... Read More

  • While I remain enamored with the great wines of California’s past, I am on the fence in regards to what can be called their more modern style first embraced in the very early 1980s. The wines from the 1960s and 1970s were often made by winemakers operating in the field, basing their actions on the accumulated wisdom of the generations that had c... Read More

  • Dark Horse Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon Scharf Family Vineyard 2006

True to the winemaker's description, this wine is big. The nose is ripe cherry, but this Cabernet is hot. It's 14.4% abv is apparent in the bouquet. The high alcohol content doesn't throw off the balance on the palette, though. This cab is powerful and its has incredible tannins. There is a suggestion of blackberry, but it is fleeting. There is ... Read More

I've tasted this wine at the Bistro in Allyn, WA. and have obtained a couple bottles from the winery out in Grapeview. This is really a rare find...one of the best Merlots I've come upon. The grapes are from Aldercreek vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills. I beleive block 11. Dark color, full body, smooth finish, the nose is fantastic. I'd compare... Read More

  • Simon Hoggart reviewed Roger Scruton's book I Drink Therefore I am: A Philospher's Guide in The Spectator (not WS). He had this to say: "How do you use words to evoke a flavour, an aroma, an evanescent scent? Do you simply say 'this is delicious, you should try it'? Or do you try to find the words? Sometimes the effect can be banal and even hila... Read More
