Named 2007 Winemaker of the Year by the Sonoma County Harvest Fair, winemaker Michael Loykasek has been blazing new trails throughout California for the past two decades. Fresh out of U.C. Davis with a degree in enology in 1983, Mike spent 5 years developing his winemaking style in Paso Robles. From there he headed the winemaking program at Meeker Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. After leaving Meeker, Mike headed up winemaking at Armida Winery. After many successful years making wine Mike decided it was time to let the Dark Horse out of the barn, so to speak. And ever since, he's been hittin' the trails with the Dark Horse. The concept is simple: take small lots of exceptional wine and put it in a package that folks can't help but notice...and have some fun with it along the way! www.darkhorsewine.com PRESS 92 points! Wine Spectator names Dark Horse 2005 Dry Creek Zin, Treborce Vineyard, top-rated California Zinfandel. Featured in BOTH May 2008 and June 30 edition! Dallas Morning News says... • So I'm a day late, sue me. Wednesday night a few of us got together in Napa for an impromptu offline. Wines that don't suck and  BBQ from Busters in Calistoga. About 12 bottles, 2 of which were cooked/spoiled, but some others I had not tasted before. We started off with a white. 2010 Ziata Sauvignon Blanc. A Karen Cakebread wine of distinction fo... Read More

  • With the summer's heat on full blast you might be asking why I’m reviewing red wines instead of something cool, crisp and refreshing, and Cabernets to boot! Well, the truth is that plenty of folks out there enjoy a nice Cabernet this time of year. Think about it, what could be better with a steak off the grill, or better yet a lamb top round, or... • Dark Horse Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

    Snoothrank:

This is my absolute favorite wine. I love most red wines, and sometimes spend big bucks. This wine tastes like you spent big bucks and easily compares to wines costing up to $30, in my opinion. Read More

  • While traveling through Napa Valley last month I noticed that all the Vineyards I visited had roses planted around their crops. They're planted and watched closely for any early signs of infestation on the land. They monitor the Roses closely and upon early signs of problems, protective measures are taken to make sure the grape vines receive a s... • Syrah has been a perennial dark horse in the US market for much of the last two decades. It’s a grape that always seems to be on the verge of greatness, even exploding on the scene in the late 1990s under the Shiraz moniker and with a thick Aussie accent, but as we all know, Aussie Shiraz is so very 1990, and Syrah struggles to find a following ... • I'm making a lasagne bolognese for a dinner party (the whole deal from scratch, including pasta) and I want to get an interesting Italian red to pair with it. I'd love to get a Barolo but the cost is a bit prohibitive...I'm like to keep it at about 15 a bottle or less. Also maybe a light Italian white to have with appetizers. Unfortunately I live... • Well most everyone has received their wines and have had them resting for a while. Unfortunately, we had a few shipping issues along the way, but all in all I think we did pretty good. Foxall is the only one not to have received anything yet, while Shi's SS wasn't heard from, but luckily an elf stepped in and sent her some wine. Finally, it look... Read More

  • Mollydooker Cabernet Sauvignon Langhorne Creek the Maitre D 2009

    Snoothrank:

AUD$47. A blend of McLaren Vale fruit with Langhorne Creek. Aged in 80/20 American/French oak with 53% new. Intense inky black color. Intense aromas of blackcurrant, liquor vapours, mint, dark chocolate and a warm pan grille. Very over-powering for the end of the night. I really need my eye fillet steak with all the horse radish for this one! Fu... Read More
