Named 2007 Winemaker of the Year by the Sonoma County Harvest Fair, winemaker Michael Loykasek has been blazing new trails throughout California for the past two decades. Fresh out of U.C. Davis with a degree in enology in 1983, Mike spent 5 years developing his winemaking style in Paso Robles. From there he headed the winemaking program at Meeker Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. After leaving Meeker, Mike headed up winemaking at Armida Winery. After many successful years making wine Mike decided it was time to let the Dark Horse out of the barn, so to speak. And ever since, he's been hittin' the trails with the Dark Horse. The concept is simple: take small lots of exceptional wine and put it in a package that folks can't help but notice...and have some fun with it along the way! www.darkhorsewine.com PRESS 92 points! Wine Spectator names Dark Horse 2005 Dry Creek Zin, Treborce Vineyard, top-rated California Zinfandel. Featured in BOTH May 2008 and June 30 edition! Dallas Morning News says... "[2005 Treborce Zin] It's a big, juicy mouthful of dark berry and cherry flavors laced with wild herb and pepper notes." James Laube says... "Dark Horse Zin in the Winner's Circle"

Dark Horse Wine on Snooth

  • Col d'Orcia Olmaia 2001

    Snoothrank:

Enjoyed this 26 March, 2011 (with excellent Mexican horse fillet). Have had this in my cellar since 2006, so some 5 years. Very dark and still intense. Nice structure with liquorice, dark berries and oak nicely integrated. Full body despite its age, very intense, however with a soft palate and smooth tannins. Has improved a lot with cellaring. S... • So, it's time once again for me to try and guess what it is our professional users want to read about today. As it turns out, this simple task is one of the most challenging of my week. With my usual wine content it's actually pretty easy to zero on a topic that will be interesting for both myself and my readers, but here I am faced with a diffe... Read More

  • With the arrival of fall, it’s always fun to take a look at some of the heartier reds that have been hibernating through the warmer months. I get to taste a lot of wine, but I always look forward to the chances I get to taste Syrah. To me, Syrah is sort of the Riesling of red grapes: remarkably expressive of site. Syrah -- unlike some other, mor... Read More

  • Hi all!!!  I want to buy four bottles of red that are not blends.  I want a cab that is a classic cab.  One that really pops in mind when you think of what a classic one is.  I need the same for Merlot, Pinot and Syrah.  I am going to perform my own blind tasting experiment to really nail down the nuances of each and differences between them.Oh ... • The unfortunate thing, is that I seem to have lost some of my notes.  I suppose that happens with wine consumption. • Panther Creek Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Winemaker's Cuvée 2006

    Snoothrank:

Dark, brooding red with a nose of sweet strawberry with some tobacco and leather - but not the sweaty, horse-harness leather we love to hate in these New World wines. Good depth and meat upon entry with chocolate cream and strawberries dominating the flavor profile. Very well structured and balanced with ability to age an additional 4-5 years.... Read More
