Named 2007 Winemaker of the Year by the Sonoma County Harvest Fair, winemaker Michael Loykasek has been blazing new trails throughout California for the past two decades. Fresh out of U.C. Davis with a degree in enology in 1983, Mike spent 5 years developing his winemaking style in Paso Robles. From there he headed the winemaking program at Meeker Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. After leaving Meeker, Mike headed up winemaking at Armida Winery. After many successful years making wine Mike decided it was time to let the Dark Horse out of the barn, so to speak. And ever since, he's been hittin' the trails with the Dark Horse. The concept is simple: take small lots of exceptional wine and put it in a package that folks can't help but notice...and have some fun with it along the way! www.darkhorsewine.com PRESS 92 points! Wine Spectator names Dark Horse 2005 Dry Creek Zin, Treborce Vineyard, top-rated California Zinfandel. Featured in BOTH May 2008 and June 30 edition! Dallas Morning News says... "[2005 Treborce Zin] It's a big, juicy mouthful of dark berry and cherry flavors laced with wild herb and pepper notes." James Laube says... "Dark Horse Zin in the Winner's Circle"

  • This is really tough...think it's safe to believe OT and I are correct so far.As for everyone else, I really haven't much but deductive clues.Fox - I like that gift for you, but alas, it wasn't me who sent it. I would guess OT would be up there in the mix, but I could also see how one of the newbies got smart and came up with what seems a great ... Read More

  • So, do you have your wine planned out yet for the Thanksgiving meal? I'm going a bit off course this year as I am smoking my turkey so I'm probably going to go heavy on Syrah rather than Pinot Noir. But that could change based on input from the guests.First off I'll likely pop a 2010 Copain Baker Ranch Syrah as it shows quite Pinot-like and I ha... Read More

  • With the summer's heat on full blast you might be asking why I’m reviewing red wines instead of something cool, crisp and refreshing, and Cabernets to boot! Well, the truth is that plenty of folks out there enjoy a nice Cabernet this time of year. Think about it, what could be better with a steak off the grill, or better yet a lamb top round, or... • Dark Horse Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

    Snoothrank:

This is my absolute favorite wine. I love most red wines, and sometimes spend big bucks. This wine tastes like you spent big bucks and easily compares to wines costing up to $30, in my opinion. Read More

  • While traveling through Napa Valley last month I noticed that all the Vineyards I visited had roses planted around their crops. They're planted and watched closely for any early signs of infestation on the land. They monitor the Roses closely and upon early signs of problems, protective measures are taken to make sure the grape vines receive a s... • Syrah has been a perennial dark horse in the US market for much of the last two decades. It’s a grape that always seems to be on the verge of greatness, even exploding on the scene in the late 1990s under the Shiraz moniker and with a thick Aussie accent, but as we all know, Aussie Shiraz is so very 1990, and Syrah struggles to find a following ...
