Named 2007 Winemaker of the Year by the Sonoma County Harvest Fair, winemaker Michael Loykasek has been blazing new trails throughout California for the past two decades. Fresh out of U.C. Davis with a degree in enology in 1983, Mike spent 5 years developing his winemaking style in Paso Robles. From there he headed the winemaking program at Meeker Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. After leaving Meeker, Mike headed up winemaking at Armida Winery. After many successful years making wine Mike decided it was time to let the Dark Horse out of the barn, so to speak. And ever since, he's been hittin' the trails with the Dark Horse. The concept is simple: take small lots of exceptional wine and put it in a package that folks can't help but notice...and have some fun with it along the way! www.darkhorsewine.com PRESS 92 points! Wine Spectator names Dark Horse 2005 Dry Creek Zin, Treborce Vineyard, top-rated California Zinfandel. Featured in BOTH May 2008 and June 30 edition! Dallas Morning News says... "[2005 Treborce Zin] It's a big, juicy mouthful of dark berry and cherry flavors laced with wild herb and pepper notes." James Laube says... "Dark Horse Zin in the Winner's Circle"

  • We're doing a long weekend in Russian River and Napa this weekend. Flew into San Francisco yesterday with no problems. Friend picked us up at the airport, definitely beats the heck out of fighting the huge crowd at the rental car counters. Why don't they have a contiguous highway from the airport to hwy 101.So what's the first thing to do in win... Read More

  • Dark Horse Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

    Snoothrank:

A deep, dark wine that's great for a chilly night. A heaping helping of dark fruits, purple lollipops, and a sweet, vaguely vanilla finish. Great with a meal. Read More

  • Dark Horse Big Red Blend NV

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a deep, inky purple in the glass, reminiscent of a nice bold Cabernet. The nose is anything but, with aromas of red ripe fruit, raspberry, blackberry and currant overlaid with hints of mint and floral notes. The taste was pleasant, with fruit flavors that were much milder than I was expecting based on the nose. The fruit gives way... Read More

  • Looking at some notebooks the next 2 flights were '07 Vintage.'07 Agharta Black Label 98%Syrah 2%Viognier 100% Oak - This wine had extended elevage , something like 30 months, and the oak was just way too overpowering. The fruit was great and I think with a lighter oak treatment this could have been a real winner. Extended elevage is the Agharta... Read More

  • Dark Horse Big Red Blend Vns

    Snoothrank:

Fruity wine...better when a little warm. I agree that it had traces of jug wine. almost a fake fruit flavor. Lasted in the fridge for 3 days, but went acidic if not warmed to just below room temp. Ok for the price point if you want something to get to sleep...not offensive. Read More

  • My May favorite wine:  2011,The Original Dark Horse,Cabernet Sauvignon,Ca.: This rich red wine bridged my gap from Merlot to Malbec to drinking Cab red wines. Horse brings the palate safely home with its special exact ripe blueberries and blackberries taste; with a hidden coffee aroma. Retails for about $8. The choice is very excitingly good for... • Thought this was an interesting mailer I'd share with you all. Already forwarded the e-mail to Fox as he is one of the few champions of Dolcetto that I know. This would also fit in well with the "weekday wines" thread. Fox and I agreeing it's a good week day pasta night wine, or even a 1st wine in a flight of Northern Italian Reds. To all Best W...
