Cossart Gordon & Co. was established in 1745 and is the oldest company in the Madeira Wine trade. Francis Newton, a young Scot, sailed from Gravesend in Britain and arrived in Madeira on September 12th 1745 founding the company. He was joined by his younger brother Thomas from 1758 to 1763 and then by another Scot, Thomas Gordon of Balmaghie also in 1758. Thomas Murdoch joined the firm in 1791 that came to be called Newton, Gordon, Murcoch & Co. By 1850 the firm was said to be shipping "half the growth of the Island" and Newton's contacts in America through his brother Andrew (who left Scotland for Virginia) were proving to be highly successful and the company acquired an unequalled reputation as suppliers of fine Madeiras. – Description from Kursulla

  • Cossart Gordon & Co. Bual Madeira 5 Years Old Medium Rich NV

    Snoothrank:

Well, it's a fortified wine, so it's thick and syrupy. I was excited to try Madeira, but it's just too thick and viscous and cloying for me. Reminds me of a liquid sticky toffee pudding. Enticing in theory, not so much in practice. Though, my Madeira-obsessed table mate praised it highly, so I think Madeira lovers might enjoy. Read More

  • Cossart Gordon Bual Vintage Madeira 2006

    Snoothrank:

A rather unusuaul nose with a profound quinine element to the floral and herbal tones. With air panchetta and chestnut tones emerge with a slight musty edge. Moderately sweet in the mouth with cocoa and roasted chestnut flavors on the mid-palate that yield to a sugary, green walnut tone on the narrow, short finish. Very front loaded 86pts Read More

  • Cossart Gordon Bual Vintage Madeira 1920

    Snoothrank:

really deep on the nose with an uncommon combination of Mexican chocolate and broth concentrate. With air gains notes of dried papaya, anise seed and cardamom. Fairly dry and with searing acidity this possesses lots of dark, coffee liquor tones with a rich mid-palate and a long finish of roasted nuts, that turns a bit bitter and clumsy. 90pts Read More

  • Cossart Gordon & Co. Sercial Madeira 1988

    Snoothrank:

A very fine nose with chocolate, orange, quince and almond all woven together with nuanced notes of agave, sea air and some camphor. Lovely richness, round and sweet for sercial with some cocoa and light caramel tones that frame the lemon/lime core of fruit that is just a touch peachy. A long, caramel tinged finish. 93pts Read More
