All of the great Domains that inspired us to make wine are fervent believers that great wine begins in the vineyard. As winemakers we are just custodians of that fruit allowing for the reflection of the site, varietal and vintage. In pursuit of this, Copain has sought out vineyards with expositions, soil compositions, climates, clones and rootstock selections capable of producing wines of distinction and singular character. The selected terroirs we source from are, in our belief, capable of expressing the truest varietal character interwoven with site characteristics and ultimately the vintage nuances. Further enhancing this expression is our belief in organic farming practices which allows the natural balance of flora and fauna inherent in each site to impact the developing vine, fruit and finally the wine. Winemaking practices aim to express each sites unique qualities which thereby means a minimum of intervention. Overripe fruit, excessive physical and chemical manipulation of the must and over use Read more »

  • I'm of the mind that decanting is a good thing. Especially with aged wines. I've decanted young wines anywhere from an hour to up to seven hours just to see how the structure would differ. And I've done the side-by-side comparisons to justify my insanity. However, I do realize, as in with stemware, that this may be an extremely subjective topic.... Read More

  • LOL guys!Tonight I popped a 10yr old Copain Tous Ensemble Pinot Noir. Really an impressive showing. Bright cherry, flinty minerality, chewy tannins, beginning to show some secondary aromas and flavors. Aging very gracefully.  Good genes, a blend of Kiser and Monument Tree Vineyards. Read More

  • Kramer is understandably unhappy, as Matthews uses a quote from him that goes ... in the mix, was either from Copain or somewhere in Oregon.  This happens alarmingly often to wines from the "best" terroir.  And then the Burgophile will come up with some BS excuse, like Durant blaming Roberson for not taking a shot last night. (Go, Dubs!)  Or B... Read More

  • Dear Wells, I recently purchased the 2008 Gary's Syrah along with other wines. I opened the bottle last week and was unpleasantly surprized at the results. The wine was totally without any fruit characteristics and seemed dead. I don't believe it was corked as there was no wet newspaper odor or mustiness about the wine, yet it totally seemed...
