Concha y Toro started off small, with Don Melchor de Santiago Concha y Toro planting the first vines in 1883 with Bordeaux grapevines at Pirque in the Maipo Valley. When Don Melchor died in 1892, his son, Juan Enrique Concha Subercaseaux took over as General Manager and created the company Concha y Toro. From there, the company took off, with exports starting in 1933. In 1963, they created Casillero del Diablo, a Cabernet Sauvignon aged for two years, and it became their best-selling premium wine. However, that wine didn’t stop them from continuing to create better wines, since in 1987 they created the Don Melchor wine, a Cabernet Sauvignon that was created with the help of experts from France with an image that exudes fine wine and grapes sources from Puente Alto vineyard.
In 1993, Concha y Toro launched their subsidiary, Viña Cona Sur, and in no time at all these wine brands became the two most successful Chilean wineries in the U.K. Not only that, but in 1994, its shares started trading on the New York Stock Exchange, making it the first winery in the world to do so.
