Coho is a winery founded in 2002 by Brooks Painter and Gary Lipp in Napa, California. The name has several meanings: It represents the species of salmon native to the region, which were revered by local indigenous people of the Pacific basin from California to Japan, symbolizing wisdom and generosity. Coho habitat preservation is a charity important to Painter and Lipp, who also occasionally produce wines in partnership with these causes. Their commitment to them was inspired by the Celtic legend known as the “Salmon of Knowledge.” The high quality wines are produced throughout Napa and Sonoma, and are available only through limited allocation by mailing list or auction.

  • GregT, I certainly understand the cultural stresses that you are having to deal ... will see wild Sockeye and Coho Salmon.  Again, very good.  Of course, the minus of shopping at Costco is the fact that you have to deal with Costco shoppers.  That is another cultural conflict.  Try to not go on weekends.  Talk about people wandering around with... • I have a question. Why is it that with the holidays, people start stocking up on Pinot Noirs? Was there someone who said that one has to pair holiday food (turkey, stuffings, ham etc) with Pinot Noir? I ask because local wine stores have been big on promoting Pinot Noirs! and I keep hearing about it.. I havent noticed it in the past years since ... Read More

  • Coho Merlot Napa Valley Michael Black Vineyard 2009

Lush, rich, smooth but with bold fruit, spice and oak. Drier than typical merlot. Rich start to finish despite the smoothness. A true "merlot" flavor in a very distinctive vintage. Bought some for drinking now (certainly ready) and some to see how it ages. Nose was a bit misleading (a bit sharper and spicier than actual taste). Read More

  • Salmon Run Coho Red 2012

This is my favorite wine under $10. Very approachable with a sweet start and smooth, slightly spicy finish. It has strong cherry and plum notes, with hints of coriander and mesquite smoke. Goes exceptionally well with spicy or grilled meats, and tomato-based foods like pasta or pizza. Read More
