Clos Rougeard seems to be something of a semi-mytical entity given the paucity of information and wine that emerges from the anonymous gates in the Rue L'Eglise in Chacé just south of Saumur itself. The brothers Charlie and Nadi Foucault quietly get on with producing some of, if not, the best Cabernet Franc in the world leaving their admirers clamouring for whatever allocation they can get each year. The estate first came to my attention in an old Revue de Vin de France on the best red wines in the Loire which called the 1989 Clos Rougeard Le Bourg 'un mythe absolu'. The estate further cemented its reputation in those pages by being rated the only 'Grand Cru Exceptionenel' (Revue du Vin de France Fevrier 2006 #498).
