Church Road Wines Complex, textural wines Church Road is a boutique winery that applies hands-on winemaking techniques to the very best of the Hawke's Bay harvest. The winery, one of the oldest in Hawke's Bay, was founded in 1897, and then totally renovated in 1989. In the years since then, our wines have earned a glowing reputation, becoming one of the most sought-after names in New Zealand restaurants. Our Wine Style With the passing of time, we have continued to develop a style of increased complexity rather than relying on simple fruit and oak flavours alone. A commitment to traditional winemaking techniques combined with ripe Hawke's Bay fruit results in wines that express complexity, texture and a sense of place. History The birthplace of quality New Zealand red wine Dating from 1897, when Bartholomew Steinmetz planted his vineyard next to Church Road, ours is one of the oldest wineries in the country. Steinmetz returned to his native Luxembourg in the 1920s, leaving his winery in the hands Read more »

  • Sorry to be morbid, but what’s your ‘death bed’ wine; the last glass you’ll taste in this life? Mine’s Puligny-Montrachet, the famous but expensive white Burgundian. The big price tag is no hassle if it’s your final pleasure but on a Wednesday evening? Yep, that may be a problem! “But is it possible to buy good value White Burgundy?”, a friend a... Read More

  • Hey everyone, what are some of your favorite 'everyday' or M-F types of wines to accompany a regular dinner?  I personally have enjoyed the Montoya Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, and I usually pick it up from Total Wines out here in Virginia.  This is one of those fruit-forward cabs that isn't too complex for me to appreciate, and it usually cost... • You have to love Australia’s red wines. If for nothing else than the sheer simplicity of twisting off a baker’s dozen of screw-caps as opposed to setting out to fight with so many corks. OK that’s not a tremendous motivation to get you to try these wines but it was a sweet sight for my sore eyes, or hand as the case may be. Some of these wines w... Read More

  • So I got back and was swamped.  Here's my spin:  I wouldn't say that Zin is a wine that improves greatly with the kind of age we are talking about here, but what was shocking was that not a single wine had gone over.  My wine of the night was the '73 Ridge:  We opened it and it was bubbling around the cork, had lots of signs of past seepage, and... •  Wow, we had a great time last night. Hopefully Foxall will have a chance to put his spin on things. I didn't take any notes, just 2 pictures but I lined up some of the dead soldiers this morning. 15 people, over 30 different wines and not a single dud except for a sweet/syrupy/candied 2001 Rosenblum Monte Rosso Zinfandel. But enough for the bad... Read More

  • Just got this from Garagiste, and have all sorts of weird thoughts.  Like, is this for real?  But more importantly, will Rimmerman succeed in keeping this from going to auction, or is he just rewarding a lucky few who will turn around and sell the most valuable bottles, while others will have overpaid for who-knows-what?  Would it really be wors... • Church Road Syrah Hawkes Bay Reserve 2008

    Snoothrank:

Ripe, powerful and dark on the nose with plenty of juniper, game, truffle, herb, oak and mint aromas over light wild blackberry fruit. On entry, this is rich and broad shouldered. A bit loose perhaps, but with a bold core of sweet ripe fruit that shows fine savoriness. Deep and woodsy, retaining a dried herb character on the long finish. This ... Read More
