  • For the most part I agree Lucha except for this past-due Chianti I'm drinking at the moment. I thought it was dead so left it unrefrigerated through a couple San Diego summers. Then for some reason I decided to open it just now. Turns out I did it a great disservice. After all the abuse, it still had a bit of life and interest, but it faded fast... Read More

  • I'm of the mind that decanting is a good thing. Especially with aged wines. I've decanted young wines anywhere from an hour to up to seven hours just to see how the structure would differ. And I've done the side-by-side comparisons to justify my insanity. However, I do realize, as in with stemware, that this may be an extremely subjective topic.... Read More

  • Sticking with the Costco wines, tonight OK, I certainly understand why ... why people want to denigrate Chianti wines, but you have to remember, these are low-dollar wines.  OK, it's not terribley complex, and it is certainly not very full-bodied, but, gosh, it is pretty darned easy to drink.  I may have been turned off by a barnyard nose, but... • Castello di Nipozzano Chianti Rufina Riserva 2012

    Snoothrank:

Very much a barnyard nose. On the tongue, typical, to me, lightly red-fruited, but, then, noticeable tartness. Medium bodied. Very drinkable, and, for $14, good QPR. Read More

  • Welcome Ellen, nice first post (a big rarity around here at Snooth).I've ... of much of Italy and Spain (Chianti, Piedmont/Barolo or Barbaresco, or traditional Rioja for example) tend to be squarely on the savory side. Some of the wines may be very expensive such as a Gaja single vineyard Barbaresco, retails around $300. Saw one in a friend's ... Read More

  • Long time lurker on both Snooth and Wine Berserkers. Why I decided to post now, I am not sure. Lover of California red wines particularly Zins and Cabs. Just getting into Pinots. Hate spending more than $50/ bottle. My comfort level is between $30-$40. Small wine cellar ( about 100 bottles) because we tend to drink what we buy.I do not feel that... Read More

  • Castello Sonnino Chianti Montespertoli Castello di Montespertoli 2001

    Snoothrank:

Full-bodied, very smooth with a "spice" or kick to it that is a little foreign ... the palate when you think of Chianti. Not the most complex wine in the world, but interesting enough to linger with you long after your glass is empty. Highly acidic but extremely refreshing in every sense of the word. I cannot speak to the older vintages, but I... Read More

  • My wine of the year was undoubtedly the 1971 Mascarello Monprivato with the ... drinking and tasting lots of Chianti this year, with a few notable standouts: 2010 Fattoria di Vegi Chianti Classico Riserva, 2013 Montefioralle Chianti Classico Riserva, and while not Chianti the 1999 Fontodi Flaccianello was amazing. But my wine of the year might ...
