Chateau Rieussec was originally the property of the monks of Carmes [ie Carmelite ] de Langon but during the French revolution all church property was confiscated and auctioned off. There were a series of owners until 1984 when the Rothschilds bought it. It was a first growth in the 1855 classification The estate consists of 110 hectares with 68 under vine making it one of the largest in the Sauternes appellation. Three wines are produced; a grand wine;a second wine now  called Carmes de Rieussec [ but originally called Chateau Mayne des Carmes ]; and R.Rieussec which is a dry white wine under the simple Bordeaux appellation

  • Quite the sea change in Bordeaux as prices seem a bit more affordable these days (as opposed to the 2009 bull rush just 5-6 years ago), and it appears they have a vintage that strikes the right balance between cool and warm. Not a too hot or too cold year that is, probably the first one like it since 2008.Eyeing Grand Puy Lacoste at $53/each, Du... Read More

Sauternes is an appellation created in 1936,although viticulture in the area goes back centuries, for sweet white wines from 5 communes around the tiny village of that name close to the town of Langon on the west bank of the Garonne about 20 miles so... • There are hundreds of sweet wines but if we had a survey to name just one, bet your bottom dollar that Sauternes would be top of the list. This famous French sweetie is served at posh dinner parties and top restaurants around the world, usually in those silly little ‘thimble’ glasses but hey, let’s talk about the wine itself for a minute. The Sa... Read More

  • In past posts here on the Forum I have confessed that I regularly drink inexpensive wines.  In fact, I have been doing less of that, lately, but last night I picked one out of the rack that, pretty much, blew me away;  Epicuro 2009 Salice Salentino -- US$4.99 at Trader Joe's.This wine is a blend of Negroamaro (80%) and Malvasia Nera (20%) grapes...
