Château Poujeaux, known in the 16th century as "La Salle de Poujeaux", an outbuilding of the present Château Latour, was purchased by Mr Castaing in 1806, and subsequently divided into three in 1880. In 1921, François Theil bought one third. All the vintages as from 1957 were signed Jean Theil, who succeeded in reuniting the three châteaux into a single winery, as it was before 1880. Since 1981, the estate has been run by three of his sons, Philippe, Jean-Pierre and François Theil. In March 1997, the seven children created the Société Anonyme Jean THEIL. Over the last 15 years, the production area has been increased by 10 hectares. Considerable investments have been made for the cellars, with temperature control, ageing in new oak barrels, and increasingly stringent selection of the harvest, driven by a constant concern for quality. – Description from JelaDragoljevic

  • Potensac Médoc Cru Bourgeois Supérieur Primeurwijnen Bordeaux 2009

    Snoothrank:

The first Poujeaux that has slipped by the tonsils this year and it seems the very opaque, sang d'homme colour makes good its hedonic promise; the nose is blackberry, menthol and beet followed by a mature, balanced cedar plank, blackberry and vanilla entry. Very satisfying and ready to drink now, though can be cellared for a few more years. 8... Read More

  • Potensac X Owc 2008

    Snoothrank:

Notes of sour cherry, cedar shanks, plum and blackberry on the nose - very Medoc. Entry is smooth, with degrading, silky oak and rich Cabernet Sauvignon cassis predominating. Finish is quite long and satisfying, if just a tad sour. Ready now; holding is not required for improvement. Good value. 88 points Read More

  • I’m kicking off this year's series on value wines by taking a look at one the regions least commonly associated with value: Bordeaux. Now that’s not because Bordeaux doesn't offer value, it’s just that their value wines get little attention from the media. I’m not sure why that is. Why the big names glom all of the media’s attention. I think bac... Read More
