Terroirs are the expression of a place, a witness to history. To produce great wines in the image of a terroir: the idea is simple but the practice requires patience and humility. Pavie Macquin, this eponymous chateau, finds the key to its history in one man, Albert Macquin (1852-1911). It is to him that Saint Emilion owes the idea of grafting vines onto rootstocks, thereby saving the region from ruin by phylloxera. • As you can read HERE, I was quite a big fan of most 2012 barrel samples from Moueix on the Right Bank in Bordeaux. 2012 is generally not an en primeur purchase, but some wines seem worth the ticket. For example, Chateau Trotanoy, one of the wines of the vintage - correctly scored by the still Almighty One, Bob Parker - was almost gone before any... Read More

Nose, there are a lot of black fruits going on, black licorice, mind toasty oak, vanilla, a hint of coffee beans, very complex nose indeed, some smooth nice dirt and dry leaves coming through also, extremely aromatic. Midpalate, very silky, black licorice domi... Read More
