Created in 1930 in the cellar of an old 17th century castle, Château Musar is as much the work of a family as the living testimony of all the civilisations that have tread its soil. After a long stay in France, Gaston Hochar returned to Lebanon and created Château Musar in the cellars of the old 'Mzar' castle in Ghazir, overlooking the Mediterranean sea. What began as a hobby soon became a passion; a passion inspired by an initial encounter with renowned viticulturist Ronald Barton while he was stationed in Lebanon during the Second World War. The family's love for wine grew and in 1959, after completing his oenology diploma in Bordeaux, the eldest son, Serge, entered the business. Some call him the magician, the man behind this extraordinary wine. His response is that he only seeks is to translate what nature intended. Serge's younger brother Ronald, named after the late Barton, took over Château Musar's marketing and finance departments in 1962.

Chateau Musar on Snooth

  • I know of a number of people in the craft beer world who are purposely ... ... ... Beaucastel, for example. Chateau Musar over in the Lebanon seems to have been upholding that tradition even after Beaucastel cleaned up their act.So who else is going crazy with 'wild yeast' in the wine world, in ways that bring brett and other supposedly-unfavo... • Chateau Musar Red Blend 1994

    Snoothrank:

Enjoyed this old Musar from 1994 on 2 March, 2014. Has been in my cellar since Jan 2004, so 10 years. This is the last bottle of four.Medium dark, slightly brown/orange on the edges. Smokey, earthy warm and a spicy nose, some fruit and still powerful. The palate is spicy with fruit, plum, herbs and perhaps tea. Overall, very balanced with smooth... Read More

  • I looked at the wine list and I can't really tell what things cost because ... If you haven't had it, Chateau Musar from Lebanon is a terrific wine, and pretty reasonable, although it can't really beat the comparative restaurant value of those Italians.   Actually, the Isole e Olena Chianti is not a bad deal.  While it seems pricey for Chianti... • Jeune Rouge Château Musar 2010

    Snoothrank:

I had never even heard of Lebanese wine when I tried this at Wine Kitchen in Leesburg, VA and boy, oh boy what a surprise! This wine manages to have the aggressive tannins of a big, bad red, yet with incredibly soft, gentle flavors like blueberry and violet. Paired perfectly with gnocchi, spring peas and morel mushrooms thanks to a body that cou... Read More

  • I don't feel like iron is a proper wine descriptor but it is something that I recently perceived. The wine definitely was not flawed...it was actually DELICIOUS.Would this be considered as having good minerality? Come from mineral rich soils? It is a Sicilian red wine called Nerello Mascalese and I am not sure if this is a typical trait? I know ... Read More
