The CAVES AND ENTREPOTS DE MOULIS (Moulis Cellars and Warehouses) were built in 1871 in the heart of the Upper Médoc, next to the Moulis railway station. At the time, the owners were the PETIT-LAROCHE family, 19th-century wine merchants, whose head office was located 104 cours Saint-Louis in Bordeaux. The family chose the location near the station because horse-drawn carriages had only a short distance to cover to load their wines on trains travelling to destinations throughout Europe. As Messrs Petit Laroche put it at the time: “The purpose of the Entrepôts de Moulis Company is to market, both in Bordeaux and abroad, Médoc wines stored in cellars built by the company opposite Moulis station, a central location between Margaux, Pauillac, Saint-Julien and Saint-Estèphe”. The magnificent freestone building originally covered 3,000 m². It was built “with painstaking care and all the perfecting conducive to excellent cellaring of wines. A vast corridor or wall walk goes around the building Read more »

  • Château Maucaillou 2012

Olive, cedar, and a fairly heavy carriage of pencil lead oak on the nose which is tight complex and above pay grade with enough stuffing underneath to carry it well. Powerful on entry, and a bit extracted perhaps, showing notes of graphite, oak and fresh fruit in the mouth the mouth. A powerful yet elegant wine, a bit of a beast in fact though w... Read More

  •    I just posted almost all of my notes on Bordeaux 2012 on my ... nice vertical and dinner at Chateau Maucaillou in Moulis: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010. While 2010 is not ready yet for drinking, the 2009 needs a hefty serving of beef and foie gras - which we enjoyed. The 2008 is quite delicious now, not as big or tough as the 2009 (at this s... On the nose, juicy red currant and straw along with cranberry and Bing cherry. On the palate, it has very strong acid that I found to be a bit overpowering. Dry, currant flavor with sour cherry and some earth. No finish. - 84 pts.4/7/12 Read More

  • If I were anywhere near New York on the 29th I'd be going to this event. Great wine, interesting winemakers, and lots of old posters, art nouveau or otherwise. Why is it I'd rather have one of them on my wall then a Flash banner ad from the Web?Price seems like more than a bargain, and the money goes to charity, too....   ... Here's your chance ... • Just a quick posting on a tasting we did last week.  We've been celebrating our tenth anniversary, and I stockpiled 2001s.  Good thing it was a strong vintage in so many places.  Of course, the 2001 Gran Reservas from Rioja are, in some cases, just hitting the market and are terrific values. We celebrated with a bottle we bought in the first cou... Read More
