Château Margaux was one of the first four estates to be named a First Growth (Premier or 1er Cru Classé) in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855, and continues to be one of the most prestigious wines in all of France. The estate, then known as “La Mothe de Margaux,” was founded in the early 12th century on the left bank of the Garonne estuary in the Médoc. For over a couple of centuries, this ensured the sale and trade of Bordeaux wines, Margaux included, to the English market. The royal family and assorted English nobility became huge fans as a result. In the 1570s, Pierre de Lestonnac overhauled the estate and vineyards, clearing grain in favor of grapevines, and propelled the future success of the wines. Château Margaux on Snooth

  • Pinot has been a much celebrated topic here on Snooth over the years I've participated, and it's obviously one of the more celebrated grapes in the wine world. It'll no doubt be a story line I plan on focusing on in years to come so I thought I'd start a thread, logging experiences. Sorry in advance, Greg T.Having said that, I've been mostly dis... •    I just posted almost all of my notes on Bordeaux 2012 on my ... ... but it turned out to be Chateau Margaux 1953! A beautiful wine indeed. At first I preferred the Durfort Vivens, but over time the Margaux overtook it.  But the evening was not over yet. There was a Burgundian interlude. At least I guessed that much, even guessing the corre... Read More

  • I am a new wine lover. A year or two ago I was having troubles staying away from 'the sauce'.  It wasn't alcoholism, per se, but it was getting to the point where I was spending much of my money and getting very little done. So, being that I am working in a fine dining restaurant, Carnevor Steakhouse in Milwaukee, WI, I decided to begin studying... Read More

  • Château la Gurgue Red Bordeaux Blend Margaux 2006

    Snoothrank:

The 2006 La Gurgue is creamy, soft and sensual - a true Margaux - but lacks a little finesse. But do not be deterred: this is a decent Bordeaux - redolent of blackberry and stem with a soft cassis entry and finish. Some acerbity on the back palate, but tannins fading. Drinking well now, but will keep to 2016 and beyond. A good expression of... Read More
