The trend over the past decade or so in Bordeaux (and around the globe) has been towards bigger, darker, fruitier wines. There have been many means to this end: Better clonal selection in the vineyards, lower yields, improved viticultural practices, cold soaking of fruit before fermentation, and mechanical intervention.Much of this work allows o... I was fortunate to be invited to the Weekend of Grand Amateurs tasting in Bordeaux this past month, and while I do indeed look forward to tasting the much-heralded 2009s in such a format, this year's focus was the less acclaimed -- and often maligned -- 2007 vintage.2007 is a vintage defined by its weather, in more ways than one. Not only does t... Read More
I've just returned from the International Malbec Days in Cahors, a festival meant to elevate the profile of "original" Malbec, and offer insight into the relationship between old world and new world expressions of the varietal.I'll be writing more about both the trip and the region, but for now, I wanted to offer highlights. I had limited exposu... Read More
What's the worst wine you have ever had? I had some Don Luciano Shiraz over the weekend (which is a $4.00 wine I picked up at Wal-Mart...just to see). I had had the Don Luciano Chardonnay and it was OK, but the Shiraz I had smelled like road kill (very heavy sulfur)--I wonder if I got a bad bottle. Has anyone else tried it? Read More
Not, I repeat not, a thread about whether the 2009 Bordeaux is great, but more about whether you trust the reviews. After the 2009 en primeur week, the opinion is unsurprisingly about a brilliant "vintage of the decade". I think this is the 3rd in the last 10 years n'est-ce-pas? So do we need to review how we review the en primeur? Do you trust ... Read More
Everyone has a favorite "just for fun wine"--one that you drink because it just tastes good. These fun wines are great to fall back on for parties or just enjoying at the end of the day. I had a great "fun" wine this weekend from Debonne Vineyards (Madison, OH) , Razzberry Riesling. The Raspberry brought out the flavors of the Riesling nicely an... Read More
Lets get something straight, I like bubbles. Yes, I like bubbles in my wine. Well, that is I like Champagne and Sparkling Wines. I like bubbly wine from everywhere. I even like sparkling shiraz. However, not all sparkling wines are made equal. Some sparkling wines are very, very good and some are very bad. However, when they are good the... Read More
I just can't help but feel like both WA and WS are rating wines higher then they have in the past. These thoughts are coming from my true love in wine, Barolo. I remember reading reviews on wines from 1996, 1998, 1999, 2001 (all great vintages) and for some of the best producers in that region I would see scores of 90 - 94 for some of the best... Read More
I'll be in Sonoma for a few days in August of this month and while much of my schedule has been set I was hoping, at the suggestion dmcker, to accumulate valuable information such as we've done for Napa.So who has the goods on Sonoma?Just to begin I'll be staying at the Best Western right in Sonoma, good rates, a nice property and walking distan... Well it's official. I'll be going to Napa from July 6th through the 10th for my first official vacation for over three years. Got a sweet room at a place in St. Helena and I'm looking for recommendations of what the best places are to taste. I plan on spending at least two days in the Valley tasting, with a day trip out to Santa Cruz mountain... Read More
