Château Kirwan is a Third Growth wine produced in the Margaux department of Bordeaux, in Cantenac, France. The 18th century property was originally owned by nobleman Renard de la Salle, and was known then as La Terre Noble de la Salle. Sir John Collingwood of Great Britain turned the estate into a working winery. It was passed on to his son-in-law, Mark Kirwan, and the name stuck ever since. The wine has the distinction of being one of Thomas Jefferson’s favorites.
The winery suffered much the same fate as many in the difficult times surrounding the French Revolution, the Phylloxera blight and world wars, with periods of destruction, replanting and changing of hands. A total restructuring of the vineyard took place in the 1950s at the hands of Jean-Henri Schyler with whom it gained a significant brand resurgence. In the 1990s, under the guidance of Michel Rolland, the wine took on a more modern style of heavier fruit extraction and use of new oak, bringing higher Read more »

  • Chateau Kirwan 3ème Grand Cru Classé Rosso Chateau Kirwan 2005

The 2005 Kirwan has been sitting for about 9 years in my cellar, but with a possible move pending, she must be consumed. Colour is excellent; and the bouquet is filled with cedar plank, sweet (Kirsch) cherry and just a hint of white pepper and chlorine. On the palate, the dominant flavour is cherry with white pepper, vanilla and a hint of Frenc... Read More

  • Time to turn the amp up to 11, at least for the wine hype machine, thanks to James Suckling on the 2015 vintage of Chateau Margaux:"The greatest Margaux ever made. More than perfection. Full body, firm and ultra-silky tannins. Black currant, mineral and floral character. It starts slowly and seems almost endless on the palate. Seamless. I want t... Read More

  • Château Kirwan Margaux Pre-Arrival 2012

Light, high-toned and yet with a sweet edge to the decidedly herb tinged fruit on the nose. This is cool, compressed, elegant and focused in the mouth; not a big wine but classic. There is a real sense of delicacy here, and lovely purity and transparency on the palate leading to a long, ripe finish covered with soft tannins and juicy acids accen... Read More

  • If I were anywhere near New York on the 29th I'd be going to this event. Great wine, interesting winemakers, and lots of old posters, art nouveau or otherwise. Why is it I'd rather have one of them on my wall then a Flash banner ad from the Web?Price seems like more than a bargain, and the money goes to charity, too....   ... Here's your chance ...
