In 1321, under the reign of Pope John XXII, four barrels were brought from the papal cellar in Avignon to be filled with wine in Châteauneuf. Subsequently, the Popes increased their vineyard holdings in the region and the papal wine gained in fame. The Beaucastel family were living in Courthezon by the middle of the sixteenth century. In 1549 "Noble Pierre de Beaucastel" bought "a barn with its plot of land extending to 52 saumées at Coudoulet". Later, the manor house that we know today was built here and you can still see the arms of the Beaucastel family sculpted in stone in one of walls of the drawingroom. The Beaucastels were among the more notable families of this little town and in 1687 Pierre de Beaucastel, in recognition of his conversion to Catholicism after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, was appointed "Capitaine de la ville de Courthezon" by Louis XIV. • Château de Beaucastel Red Rhone Blend Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1996

Light game on the nose with big red berry and a very slight mushroom note. Also a suggestion of copper minerality. On the palate, wonderful red berry fruit up front. Minerals. White pepper, cigar tobacco. Great aromatics and flavors. Complex, layered and well balanced. 97 pts.5/26/12 Read More

  • Château de Beaucastel Red Rhone Blend Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1988

Garnet in the glass. Nose of mushrooms, sarsparilla, game, earth and dried leaves. Flavors of cola, mushroom and dried herbs. Also, truffle, dried strawberry, blueberry, cranberry and pomegranate notes with hints of raspberry, blackberry and pepper. Still nice and has interesting layers of complex aged fruit flavors. 91 pts.4/21/12 Read More

  • Chateau de Beaucastel Coudoulet 2011

Suprisingly received 2 of these for Christmas from multiple people...which is good, so I can drink one now! Pours a rich violet color with deep red hues on the edges. Lots of dark berries, cassis and peppery spices on the nose. Starts off with a solid amount of dark berry jam. In the middle, lots of currants, spices, blackberry with some bis... Read More

  • Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 1998

The nose was reticent yet refined with perfectly ripe blackberry, spice, and hints of wood and stems. It opened over time with sweeter fruit and hints of undergrowth. On the palate, it was beautifully balanced and smooth yet holding back at first. As it opened in the glass, flavors of finessed black fruits and medicinal herbal tea notes sweetene... Read More

  • 1998 was the year Chateauneuf-du-Pape finally got some respect. Don’t me wrong, the wine had maintained a loyal following for years, but more often than not the wines were described as rustic, earthy and in quite a few cases, dirty.1998 was the turning point that changed that impression in consumers’ eyes, or at least those consumers who had yet... • Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 1998

Tight and clean, smoky, mineral, floral, oleander, balanced, reticent, finesse, elegant tannins, lithe mouth feel, hinting at black cherry. This requires air. A hint of chocolate, lovely length. Smith Brothers black cherry cough drops. This lacks the explosiveness of previous bottles, perhaps its closed or the wine is past peak. Having had so ma... Read More
