In 1321, under the reign of Pope John XXII, four barrels were brought from the papal cellar in Avignon to be filled with wine in Châteauneuf. Subsequently, the Popes increased their vineyard holdings in the region and the papal wine gained in fame. The Beaucastel family were living in Courthezon by the middle of the sixteenth century. In 1549 "Noble Pierre de Beaucastel" bought "a barn with its plot of land extending to 52 saumées at Coudoulet". Later, the manor house that we know today was built here and you can still see the arms of the Beaucastel family sculpted in stone in one of walls of the drawingroom. The Beaucastels were among the more notable families of this little town and in 1687 Pierre de Beaucastel, in recognition of his conversion to Catholicism after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, was appointed "Capitaine de la ville de Courthezon" by Louis XIV. • Chateau Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape Hommage 2009

    Snoothrank:

This 2009 Blend of Counoise, Cinsault, Mourvedre, Grenache & Syrah from Rhone, France is excellent. Good Ruby-red color with a tight rim variation. Fruit notes of plum and fig with a hint of cocoa and tobacco. It has a long finish on the palette with mid acidity. This wine has not peaked and will mature nicely over time (2019-2024). Best served ... Read More

  • Châteauneuf-du-Pape has been on fire lately. With spiraling prices and an explosion of points fueling that rise, it’s both hard to ignore Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines, and perhaps harder still to buy them. These wines were once the purview of all wine drinkers—slightly rustic at one time, exuberant bistro wines filled with rich fruit flavors in a s... Read More

  • Orin Swift the Prisoner Napa Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

Sweet and dusty on the nose, this shows aromas of tight red fruits flecked with mineral and allspice notes. On entry the texture is quite silky with black cherry fruit that is threaded with a contrasting medicinal edge. There is lovely purity and aromatic fruit, violet and sweet spice notes that are wrapped up in a restrained, slightly chewy pac... Read More

  • Sometimes the wine gods conspire against you. I actually knew something like ... often awe inspiring wines of Chateau de Beaucastel. Now you might have read that I am not a particularly enthusiastic fan of Chateauneuf, which is true since I am usually the one writing that, but the truth lies more with Grenache than with the wines of Chateauneu... • Chateau de Beaucastel Coudoulet Rouge 2011

    Snoothrank:

Another nose that remains somewhat tight with medicinal cherry, leather, and garrigue aromas framed with a little spice, and a little floral nuance. With a lovely combination of liquory, plump, rich fruit, and a bit a bit of bitterness this fills the mouth that drops off quickly on the backend this is a bit short, but the black berry fruit and... • Château de Beaucastel Red Rhone Blend Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1999

    Snoothrank:

Tight and focused on the nose with beautiful, spicy, leathery, clean aromas that are still youthful with hints of chalk, spice, and dark fruit On entry this is almost voluptuous with really vibrant acids with decisive cut and round, ample tannins that segue into spicy dark cherry fruit that shows a slightly dried edge. Ultimately this is a littl... Read More

  • Château de Beaucastel Red Rhone Blend Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1997

    Snoothrank:

Smoky on the nose with mature aromas of leather, toasty briary pipe, and mineral notes with fine focus. On the palate this is broad and open with nice richness of fruit on the edges but a little lean on the mid-palate, a classic grenache mouthfeel. There is nice darker fruit on the backend and soft tannins that grow on the finish with has decen... Read More
