In 1321, under the reign of Pope John XXII, four barrels were brought from the papal cellar in Avignon to be filled with wine in Châteauneuf. Subsequently, the Popes increased their vineyard holdings in the region and the papal wine gained in fame. The Beaucastel family were living in Courthezon by the middle of the sixteenth century. In 1549 "Noble Pierre de Beaucastel" bought "a barn with its plot of land extending to 52 saumées at Coudoulet". Later, the manor house that we know today was built here and you can still see the arms of the Beaucastel family sculpted in stone in one of walls of the drawingroom. The Beaucastels were among the more notable families of this little town and in 1687 Pierre de Beaucastel, in recognition of his conversion to Catholicism after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, was appointed "Capitaine de la ville de Courthezon" by Louis XIV. The letter from Louis XIV, also signed by Colbert, to Pierre de Beaucastel is still in our Read more »

  • Château de Beaucastel White Rhone Blend Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet de Beaucastel Blanc 1998

    Snoothrank:

The nose was reticent yet refined with perfectly ripe blackberry, spice, and hints of wood and stems. It opened over time with sweeter fruit and hints of undergrowth. On the palate, it was beautifully balanced and smooth yet holding back at first. As it opened in the glass, flavors of finessed black fruits and medicinal herbal tea notes sweetene... Read More

  • 1998 was the year Chateauneuf-du-Pape finally got some respect. Don’t me wrong, the wine had maintained a loyal following for years, but more often than not the wines were described as rustic, earthy and in quite a few cases, dirty.1998 was the turning point that changed that impression in consumers’ eyes, or at least those consumers who had yet... • Château de Beaucastel White Rhone Blend Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet de Beaucastel Blanc 1998

    Snoothrank:

Tight and clean, smoky, mineral, floral, oleander, balanced, reticent, finesse, elegant tannins, lithe mouth feel, hinting at black cherry. This requires air. A hint of chocolate, lovely length. Smith Brothers black cherry cough drops. This lacks the explosiveness of previous bottles, perhaps its closed or the wine is past peak. Having had so ma... Read More

  • I know there have been at least one or two conversations about buying wines at Costco, but I happened to catch the one hour documentary about Costco on CNBC, last night.  They actually spent a significant portion of the program (8-9 minutes) about wine sales.  Here is the thing that blew me away.  Apparently, annual wine sales at Costco exceed a... • I taste a lot of wine, both for work and pleasure.  I would like to get better at it, but I don't know how.   While I am able to pick out varietals, and often, even regions, pretty accurately, I want more than that. I want to be able to pick out all of the wine's nuances, both on the nose and on the palate.  Often when I am tasting I find that o... • Had one of those once in a lifetime days betting the ponies today.  With the winnings, i'm probably going to be budgeting up to $1500.00 on some more expensive wines I haven't been able to afford in the $80-$200 range.  Any suggestions?  I favor a right-bank bordeaux style for reds but also enjoy a medium bodied cabernet style, along with rhone ... • Hi there,                 My 30th is coming up in March. One of the things I've wanted to do since I was about 6 is to drink a red wine from the year I was born (81).  I don't have the type of money to blow 1000's of dollars on a wine or buy a case to ensure the wine is about to peak (probably a bit late to do that anyway).  Does anyone have any...
