The vineyards are located just outside the town of St Emilion, to the west, and just to the north of those of Chateau Canon; of the 20 hectare estate, 19 hectares are devoted to vines. They begin on the limestone plateau on which the town is situated, running away towards the first valleys which mark the descent down to the plain, to the west, where the soils are much less favourable. The Clos Fourtet vines average 30 years of age, and undergo leaf thinning in June and August, and later a green harvest in order to maximise quality and reduce yields. Between the rows there is grass in order to increase competition for water in the superficial soil layers, thus forcing the vine roots deeper, and improving their capability to cope with hydric stress. Merlot dominates, at 85% of the vineyard, with Cabernet Sauvignon accounting for 10% and Cabernet Franc just 5%, all planted at a density of 6000 vines/ha. The fruit is harvested by hand into small crates to minimise damage, before fermentation on a plot-by-plot Read more »

  • The Clos Fourtet (St Emilion) was, the other two Cabernet Sauvignon driven though I don't know the exact percentages.Followed up with a 2003 Chateau Musar and a 2009 Pinot Nero...will have to ask who the producer was but I enjoyed both of them arguably more than the Bordeaux. Read More

  • Clos Fourtet 2012

    Snoothrank:

Tight but showing nuanced plum, olive, floral and herbal aromas. Rather smooth, polished and powerful in the mouth but with terrific depth to the fruit and limestone minerality on the palate. This really has masses of fruit that are fresh and crisp wrapping up in a tight finish that is plush with soft tannins, turning a bit creamy and very seduc... Read More

  • Just posted full notes on Bordeaux 2011, with videos and photos and analysis, and feel like rattling off wines that come to mind as the most memorable, if not necessarily the "best" ...The first list evidently does not take price into account, and does not include Latour and Mouton, which I did not taste, nor several apparently kick ass Pomerols... • A couple of news items I was pondering today.First, Robert Parker came out with his ratings for the 2009 Bordeaux vintage. Ever the masochist, I decided to go look at some prices in the marketplace after the ratings were released. Some samplings:2009 Chatau Latour                        100 points                  $21,500 a case2009 Chateau Marg... Read More

  • If I were anywhere near New York on the 29th I'd be going to this event. Great wine, interesting winemakers, and lots of old posters, art nouveau or otherwise. Why is it I'd rather have one of them on my wall then a Flash banner ad from the Web?Price seems like more than a bargain, and the money goes to charity, too....   ... Here's your chance ... • Though only a small portion of the final blend, the Cabernet Franc rises from the glass in a dance with the silky elements of the St.-Emilion Merlot that gracefully weave their way into the mix.  If there is a nose that can pair with a season; the bright-yet-earthy aromas from La Closerie de Fourtet would be the perfect fit with fall.Given time ...
