Chateau Carbonnieux is located just a few miles from Bordeaux. This beautiful castle overlooks one of the largest vineyards in the Graves region. The Estate's seven centuries of history have often been quite dramatic. Carbonnieux is one of the leading Graves Chateaux that justified the creation of the Prestigious Pessac-Léognan appellation. This property is one of the oldest in Graves. The original château was constructed around 1380 during the "Hundred Years War" and consequently its architecture is drawn along castellated lines. It initially belonged to the Bordeaux Hospices, thereafter the Ferron family and then the Councillors at the Parliament of Guyenne from 1519 until 1741. Named after Ramon Carbonnieux in 1234, the Château and vineyards were purchased in 1740 by Benedictines who started bottling wine at the Château. The Benedictines were ousted by the Revolution and the property changed hands several times between 1790 and 1956 when it was acquired by Marc Read more »

  • Carbonnieux Carbonnieux Blanc Pessac-Leognan 2015

The 2015 Carbonnieux has that inviting citric, acidic gooseberry nose which is a signature of the bouquet. Pale yellow in the glass, there seems to be lots of Semillon (20%, officially) which makes the entry less herbal and very white berry fresh. This is a mature, balanced and well-made wine with exceptional elegance ( a wide range of soft i... Read More

  • Anyone go to the 2019 version? They tasted the 2016 vintage.I got there really late so had to blast through at the rate of maybe one a minute. Maybe a little longer but not much as I only had an hour to taste as much as I could. So no notes, and I'm not big on those anyway, but a few observations that I really wish I had more time to explore. My ... Read More

  • Chateau Carbonnieux Pessac Leognan Blanc 2014

The 2014 edition of the well-respected Chateau Carbonnieux has grassy, gooseberry elements on the nose with a refreshingly tart, spicy white fruit and garden flower finish (ever eaten a white flower?). Perfect white Graves, in other words. This wine will age further, but is fine now. 91. Read More

  • Chateau Carbonnieux Pessac Leognan 2013

Pessac-Leognan faired quite well in this mostly forgettable vintage - at least with Chateau Carbonnieux. The colour is deeply translucent and the nose inviting with Cabernet-dominated notes of Mediterranean herbs and blackberry - quite inviting, actually. The entry is quite tame, very mildly acidic, with some soft vanilla tannin and a good frui... Read More

  • Chateau Carbonnieux Carbonnieux Blanc Grand Cru Classe de Graves 2012

Well, pedigree helps... those seven centuries of development in viniculture at Chateau Carbonnieux (a Grand Cru) helped Pessac-Leognan detach itself from Graves. The 2012 Blanc Grand Vin evokes acidic green fruit (like gooseberry) with a sweet spice and even fresh snow on the nose. Entry is balanced, but retains enough acid to last a few more ... Read More

  • Château Carbonnieux Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend Pessac-Léognan Blanc 2011

This intriguing, not-so-cheap Graves white from the somewhat unheralded 2011 vintage offers a nose of herbal tea - tisane with chamomile and lemon peel, perhaps, with a hint of spearmint. Very inviting. The entry is presents a pleasant hedonic hit as well with peach, sweet lemon and pear. There is some tartness, but mostly balanced, elegant an... Read More

  • I am a wine newbee and I am almost angry that I have gone *ehem* 38 yrs and not really enjoyed wine like I should have. I'm starting to get a little more familiar with my local stores, however I'm not sure I could ever truly know everything there is to know about every wine out there.  So.....I have recently decided that I love a good Red Bordea...
