Château Canon La Gaffelière is located on the outskirts of the medieval town of Saint-Emilion, at the southern foot of the slope. The 19.5 hectare vineyard has a complex, outstanding terroir of clay-limestone and clay-sand soil. The topsoil is primarily sandy, increasingly so as one moves away from the slope. The unusual proportion of grape varieties (55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) at Canon-La-Gaffelière is perfectly suited to the soil. The average amount of Merlot is approximately 70% in Saint-Emilion. This variety contributes roundness and opulence. However, the high percentage of Cabernet Franc at Canon-La-Gaffelière is unquestionably well-adapted to the estate's warm soil. This variety accounts for an exquisite bouquet with spicy, floral overtones, as well as power and aromatic complexity. The old Cabernet Franc vines do especially well on soil with a high clay content. Seeing as the Cabernets are usually late-ripening, they take full advantage of the estate's warm soil. This means they mature much earlier than in most other parts of the appellation. The vines, an average of 45 years old, are deeply rooted in the soil and absorb all the goodness in the Read more »

  •    I just posted almost all of my notes on Bordeaux 2012 on my ... my ... a double magnum, the Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere 1999 was not as good - it looks more evolved even though coming from a large format - while the Barton is fresher, more cedar like. Still, the Canon La Gaffeliere did convey pleasing richness.  One of the best lunches was... Read More

  • If I were anywhere near New York on the 29th I'd be going to this event. Great wine, interesting winemakers, and lots of old posters, art nouveau or otherwise. Why is it I'd rather have one of them on my wall then a Flash banner ad from the Web?Price seems like more than a bargain, and the money goes to charity, too....   ... Here's your chance ... • Château Canon Red Bordeaux Blend St. Émilion Grand Cru 2007

A bit Funky on the nose with a dusty character and dried wild cherry fruit accented with green tobacco notes. On entry this is rather soft, modestly endowed with a nice mineral soil tone up front then building gently layered complexity with notes of cherry, tobacco, and oak spice building across the palate. The backend shows better focus as the ... Read More

  • Château Canon Red Bordeaux Blend St. Émilion Grand Cru 2007

Dark, earthy nose, slightly fudgy, tomato leaf, carnations, integrated and balanced wood spice nice fruit up front, a bit lean on the mp, slightly elevated acids, nice fresh fruit, fairly structured for its size, a bit tough, balanced though, moderate finish shows some tough tannins, will need some time (87-88) Read More

Well made, full of rich fruit, but a bit oo extracted for my palette. I can't pick a fault with the wine, but somehow it lacks some fun. It ticks the right boxes in quality stakes, but somehow it lacks a little imagination and cunning to make it a great wine.Good, very good, but not great. Read More
